The Dell G15 5520 offers a heftier build with greater performance for tasks like gaming and engineering due to its stronger processor and graphics card, but this comes at the cost of being significantly more expensive and heavier, making it less ideal for frequent travel. In contrast, the MSI Modern 14 is more budget-friendly and portable with a lighter build, suitable for general use such as office tasks and everyday computing, while its performance is less suited for demanding applications. Both laptops have similar display sizes and resolutions, but the Dell's higher refresh rate can provide smoother visuals. Your choice depends on whether your priority is high performance at a higher price and less portability with the Dell, or cost savings and greater portability with moderate performance from the MSI. The Dell G15 5520 and MSI Modern 14 are both good for general use, though the Dell G15 5520 is somewhat better.
The Dell G15 5520 is favored for general use due to its powerful Intel i7 CPU, ample RAM, and dedicated Nvidia RTX 3060 GPU, contributing to better performance in demanding tasks, but with the tradeoff of being heavier and bulkier which affects portability. On the other hand, the MSI Modern 14 offers comparable RAM and a capable AMD Ryzen CPU with integrated graphics, ensuring good everyday performance in a more portable and lightweight design; however, it may not handle intensive graphical tasks as well as the Dell, and its smaller battery might translate to similar battery life despite the lower power consumption.

The Dell G15 5520 is good for gaming and AI, while the MSI Modern 14 is only fair.
The Dell G15 5520 offers a better gaming and 3D experience because it has a robust Nvidia RTX 3060 graphics card which outperforms the integrated Vega 7 graphics in the MSI Modern 14, and it also features a higher screen refresh rate, beneficial for smoother visuals in games. While both have competent processors and decent screen quality, the superior GPU and refresh rate in the Dell make it more suitable for gaming and 3D applications, despite likely costing more.

The Dell G15 5520 has a better screen than the MSI Modern 14 for general use, gaming and AI, engineering and design, software development, and content creation.
The Dell G15 5520 offers a more vivid and accurate display suitable for engineering and design tasks due to its better color coverage, providing a more precise visual experience. However, its lower refresh rate makes it less optimal for gaming and 3D applications, which require smoother motion rendering. In contrast, the MSI Modern 14, while offering adequate resolution and brightness for everyday tasks and professional work, falls short in both color fidelity critical for design work and the high refresh rates desired for 3D gaming.

How the Dell G15 5520 and the MSI Modern 14 compare to other laptops
Olivier Martin, Ryan Lim, and John Peroramas | April 2023
"The Dell G15 (2022) is a 15.6-inch budget gaming laptop, and is great for gaming. You can configure the laptop with powerful Intel 12th Gen. CPUs and various NVIDIA dedicated GPUs, all of which deliver a smooth gaming experience at 1080p. There's also a QHD 240Hz display option if you want better visuals, though you'll have to pair it with the top-end NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti to get good frame rates. It doesn't get overly hot or loud under load, and there's no noticeable throttling on the CPU or GPU. Unfortunately, the 120Hz panel has a slow response time, causing noticeable ghosting, and it doesn't support variable refresh rate."
Alexander Tozzi, Ryan Lim, and John Peroramas | October 2023
"The MSI Modern 14 is okay for school use. It's very compact, so it's easy to carry around. It has a sharp display, a spacious keyboard, and a reasonably large touchpad. Its Intel 13th Gen CPU and integrated graphics can handle general productivity tasks like text processing and web browsing; however, don't expect to do anything intensive like 3D modeling or physics simulations. Unfortunately, the battery lasts less than five hours of light use, and the display doesn't get bright enough to combat glare."
