The Dell G15 5520 is often less expensive than the MSI Katana 15 and offers a better battery life, which is important for those who need to work on the go. However, the MSI Katana 15, while typically more expensive and with a shorter battery life, boasts a higher performance GPU which can be beneficial for intensive gaming, 3D rendering, or machine learning tasks. Both laptops have similar storage and RAM, powerful main processors, and comparable screen sizes and resolutions. The Dell has a higher refresh rate screen for smoother visuals, which can be an advantage for gaming as well. If portability and battery life are significant for you, the Dell could be the better option; conversely, if you require more graphical power and can manage with less battery life, the MSI would be preferable. The Dell G15 5520 has a better screen than the MSI Katana 15 for general use, gaming and AI, engineering and design, software development, and content creation.
The Dell G15 5520 likely offers a display with adequate resolution and brightness, suiting everyday tasks and visual clarity for engineering applications, but it may lack a high refresh rate crucial for the smooth visuals demanded in gaming and 3D rendering. Conversely, the MSI Katana 15's display, while satisfactory for day-to-day functions and engineering software, may have shortcomings in both color accuracy and refresh rate that are essential for professional design tasks and immersive gaming experiences. For gaming and 3D work, both laptops seem to fall short due to their poor refresh rates, which are key for fluid motion and a responsive experience.

How the Dell G15 5520 and the MSI Katana 15 compare to other laptops
Olivier Martin, Ryan Lim, and John Peroramas | April 2023
"The Dell G15 (2022) is a 15.6-inch budget gaming laptop, and is great for gaming. You can configure the laptop with powerful Intel 12th Gen. CPUs and various NVIDIA dedicated GPUs, all of which deliver a smooth gaming experience at 1080p. There's also a QHD 240Hz display option if you want better visuals, though you'll have to pair it with the top-end NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti to get good frame rates. It doesn't get overly hot or loud under load, and there's no noticeable throttling on the CPU or GPU. Unfortunately, the 120Hz panel has a slow response time, causing noticeable ghosting, and it doesn't support variable refresh rate."
"The MSI Katana 15 B12 combines a Gen12 CPU with an RTX 4050, which is actually not a bad idea for a budget gamer. The CPU is anything but bad and the GPU in the Katana 15 proves to be significantly more efficient than last year's models. However, our main point of criticism for budget gamers is the price: while you can get budget laptops with RTX 3060 from around US$800, you pay a whole US$1,499.99 here! The efficiency advantages of the RTX 4050 do not justify this price premium."
