The ASUS Zenbook 14X offers a higher resolution OLED display which is better for color-sensitive work, with a portable design and lighter weight, making it good for on-the-go use. It features a dedicated Nvidia graphics card, which is superior for light gaming and some 3D tasks compared to the HP Envy 17's integrated graphics. On the other hand, the HP Envy 17 prioritizes screen size with a larger 17.3-inch display and includes a numeric keypad, making it suitable for productivity tasks that benefit from more screen real estate and data entry. It also has a longer battery life, so it's more suitable if you need to work for extended periods without charging. However, its larger size and heavier weight make it less portable than the Zenbook. Both have similar storage, RAM, and are priced similarly, so the decision hinges on whether portability, display quality, and better graphics (ASUS) or larger screen size, numeric keypad, and battery life (HP) are more important for your needs. The ASUS Zenbook 14X has a better screen than the HP Envy 17 for general use, gaming and AI, and engineering and design.
The ASUS Zenbook 14X has a high-resolution display offering crisp visuals and its notable brightness makes it suitable for various lighting conditions, contributing to its very good quality for general use and engineering tasks that benefit from accurate colors. However, its lower refresh rate can detract from the smooth visuals important in Gaming and 3D applications, limiting its appeal for those specific needs. On the other hand, the HP Envy 17 provides an overall good visual experience for both general use and engineering with satisfactory color representation and brightness, but like the Zenbook, it falls short for 3D and gaming due to a less optimal refresh rate.

The ASUS Zenbook 14X and HP Envy 17 are both good for engineering and design.
The ASUS Zenbook 14X is suited for engineering and design due to its powerful Intel i7 CPU, 16GB of RAM, dedicated Nvidia MX550 GPU for graphical tasks, and high-quality OLED screen. The HP Envy 17, while also equipped with a robust Intel i7 CPU and 16GB of RAM, offers an integrated Iris Xe GPU, which is less powerful for intensive graphics work than a dedicated GPU, but it compensates with a larger screen size and good screen quality, though less vivid than the ASUS's OLED panel.

How the ASUS Zenbook 14X and the HP Envy 17 compare to other laptops
"With the Zenbook 14X, Asus has a 14-incher in its range that is - mostly - a joy to use. First, there is the colorful OLED panel with 3K resolution that displays the sRGB and DCI-P3 color spaces. The Zenbook is also at the forefront in terms of workmanship, input devices and connections with 2x Thunderbolt 4 ports and a generous keyboard layout. A pleasure to use, the Zenbook 14X is a solid, very well-built subnotebook that sits well on the table. A runtime of five hours, however, is below average for a high-end subnotebook nowadays. The OLED screensaver causes increased power consumption when in idle mode."
"In our test, the HP Envy 17-cr0079ng presents itself as a balanced multimedia laptop. Thanks to its solid CPU performance and dedicated entry-level GeForce, it can also be used for playing video games, as long as the demands aren't too high. Those looking for more can find it in the Dell XPS 17 for example."
