For better performance, particularly in intensive tasks like 3D modeling, machine learning, or gaming, the ASUS Vivobook 16X is the preferable choice, as it offers a high-performance CPU and a dedicated graphics card, which the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 lacks. However, the Surface Laptop offers a higher screen resolution and is more portable due to its lighter weight and smaller size, making it a better option for frequent travelers or those who prioritize a compact laptop. The Surface also has a unique 3:2 screen ratio, which gives more vertical space, beneficial for reading and productivity. Choose the ASUS if you need raw power and don't mind a larger, heavier device, or the Surface if you're looking for a balance between performance and portability, and the higher cost is within your budget. The ASUS Vivobook 16X is good for gaming and AI, while the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 13" is only fair.
The ASUS Vivobook 16X is better for gaming and 3D applications due to its Nvidia RTX 4060 graphics card and higher screen refresh rate, which provide smoother visuals and a competitive edge in gaming. On the other hand, the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 13" has an integrated Iris Xe graphics card which, while capable for some tasks, offers less graphical horsepower and a standard refresh rate, making it less suited for demanding gaming and 3D work.

The ASUS Vivobook 16X and Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 13" offer panels with solid resolution and brightness, making them suitable for activities like browsing and video streaming, which are common in general use. For engineering and design tasks where precise color representation matters, both laptops provide good color coverage, ensuring accuracy for detailed work. However, for gaming and 3D applications, which require smooth motion and rapid refresh rates, neither laptop is optimal as they do not prioritize high refresh rates, which can limit the visual fluidity and responsiveness in these scenarios.

How the ASUS Vivobook 16X and the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 13" compare to other laptops
"I think the ASUS Vivobook 16X is fantastic. Great performance, decent battery life, good keyboard and trackpad, and a massive screen – just that the screen quality itself is kinda subpar. If you’re okay with the screen, then I think this is an okay laptop. However, I’d like to see a price drop."
"The Surface Laptop 5 remains afloat as a solid machine. It's just not one that stands out in any particular way. Just like the last one. The biggest upgrade were some new components, but they perform in the same range as other laptops with them, and frequently at the bottom of that range. I suspect Microsoft's settings are very conservative to help keep cooling and battery life within reason in the older chassis design."
