The ASUS ROG Strix G17 delivers high performance for intensive gaming and engineering but it falls short on portability due to its larger size and weight. It's priced on the higher side. In contrast, the Lenovo Legion Slim 5 offers slightly less gaming and engineering performance, but it has better battery life and it's lighter, making it more portable, at a lower price point. If portability and price are crucial, and you're okay with good but not top-tier gaming performance, the Lenovo is a solid choice. If you require peak performance and don't mind the size and cost, the ASUS might be preferable. Give Feedback

The ASUS ROG Strix G17 and Lenovo Legion Slim 5 are both very good for engineering and design, though the ASUS ROG Strix G17 is somewhat better.
The ASUS ROG Strix G17 is excellent for engineering and design thanks to its more powerful processor, larger, higher resolution screen, ensuring superb detail and workspace, combined with ample storage and a high-quality graphics card; however, this makes it less portable. The Lenovo Legion Slim 5, while still offering a robust graphics card and enough processing power for most tasks, boasts a more compact and lighter frame, making it a more travel-friendly option despite its smaller storage capacity and lower screen resolution.

The ASUS ROG Strix G17 has a better screen than the Lenovo Legion Slim 5 for general use, gaming and AI, engineering and design, software development, and content creation.
For general use, the ASUS ROG Strix G17 offers a clearer and more vibrant display than the Lenovo Legion Slim 5 due to higher resolution and brightness, making activities like browsing and video streaming more enjoyable. In engineering and design, the ASUS shines with a wider color gamut that ensures more accurate color reproduction, which is essential for tasks that demand precision like photo editing or CAD work. However, when it comes to gaming and 3D applications, the lower refresh rate of the ASUS means less smooth motion compared to laptops designed specifically for gaming, whereas the Lenovo, while also not optimized for gaming, may offer a very slightly better experience due to different panel characteristics.

How the ASUS ROG Strix G17 and the Lenovo Legion Slim 5 compare to other laptops
"The Asus ROG Strix G17 is an attractive but unbalanced gaming laptop. Its potent AMD Ryzen 9 processor excels in 1080p gaming, but playing at 1440p leaves the middling GeForce RTX 4060 GPU shouldering most of the burden. The display is exceptionally colorful, which is handy for content creators, but since this is a gaming laptop it would be better served with improved HDR capabilities. If battery life isn't a priority, the Strix G17 could serve as a designer by day and a gamer by night."
"The Lenovo Legion Slim 5 Gen 8 acknowledges that a gaming laptop doesn’t have to be as thick as possible and can still ensure adequate cooling when the muscles need flexing. To this end, in the Slim 5 Gen 8, it finds a neat balance of refined, trimmed-down design that still lets its internals cruise (even above their max power ratings). Lenovo then added in some high-end build quality with an altogether excellent keyboard that’s useful for both work and play."
