To determine whether you should buy the ASUS ROG Strix G17 or the ASUS ROG Strix G18, consider the specific needs you have. The G17 may be less expensive with slightly older hardware, suitable for everyday tasks and moderate gaming. If you're looking for the latest technology, improved performance for demanding tasks like 3D rendering, machine learning, or high-end gaming, and are willing to pay a premium, the G18 would be the better choice. Remember, newer models like the G18 may also have better battery life but could be heavier, affecting portability. Choose the G17 for affordability and satisfactory performance, or the G18 for cutting-edge features and top-notch performance, keeping in mind the trade-offs between cost, performance, and portability. The ASUS ROG Strix G18 has a better screen than the ASUS ROG Strix G17 for general use, gaming and AI, content creation, and software development.
When considering the ASUS ROG Strix G17 and G18 for general use, their panel type, resolution, and brightness offer a crisp, clear display with vibrant colors, making for an enjoyable viewing experience in everyday tasks. For engineering and design, the same qualities along with extensive color gamuts ensure that professionals can see accurate colors and fine details, which are critical for precision work. However, for gaming and 3D applications, a high refresh rate is crucial for smooth motion and responsiveness; since these models have a lower refresh rate, they fall short for fast-paced, interactive visuals where quick screen updates are vital.

How the ASUS ROG Strix G17 and the ASUS ROG Strix G18 compare to other laptops
"The Asus ROG Strix G17 is an attractive but unbalanced gaming laptop. Its potent AMD Ryzen 9 processor excels in 1080p gaming, but playing at 1440p leaves the middling GeForce RTX 4060 GPU shouldering most of the burden. The display is exceptionally colorful, which is handy for content creators, but since this is a gaming laptop it would be better served with improved HDR capabilities. If battery life isn't a priority, the Strix G17 could serve as a designer by day and a gamer by night."
"With the ROG Strix G18, Asus has made an almost consistently good debut in the still quite new 18-inch laptop segment. The base unit case shows a few signs of weakness in the area of stability and is something which has an effect on the perceived quality of the input devices (the chassis tends to rattle a bit). Nevertheless, thanks to generous port features (incl. Thunderbolt 4), a striking design, and extensive lighting (keyboard, LED strip on the front), gamers get a fitting gaming platform."
