The Dell XPS 13 is more expensive but offers better general performance, a higher-quality keyboard, and longer battery life, making it suitable for intensive tasks and those seeking a premium feel. In contrast, the MSI Modern 14 is more budget-friendly, but with reduced battery life and performance scores, it may be more suited for less demanding general use and offers less portability due to a heavier build. Neither model is optimal for intensive gaming, but the Dell's better screen and color coverage provide an advantage for creative or engineering work, despite the lack of a number pad on both models, which could be a downside for data entry tasks. The Dell XPS 13 is good for engineering and design, while the MSI Modern 14 is only fair.
The Dell XPS 13, with its higher-quality screen and Intel CPU with Iris Xe graphics, is better suited for engineering and design tasks that require more processing power and a display with higher brightness and better color coverage. On the other hand, the MSI Modern 14, while slightly more portable and cooler under operating noise, falls short due to its AMD CPU with Vega 7 graphics, lower screen brightness, and less vibrant color display, which could be less optimal for intensive design work.

The Dell XPS 13 has a better screen than the MSI Modern 14 for general use, gaming and AI, engineering and design, software development, and content creation.
The Dell XPS 13 boasts superior screen resolution and brightness which enhances the viewing experience for both general tasks and detailed engineering work, while its color accuracy supports professional design needs. However, its lower refresh rate limits its appeal for gaming and 3D applications, where fluid motion is crucial. In contrast, the MSI Modern 14 offers a balance of screen qualities that are sufficient for everyday tasks and non-specialized design work but falls short for high-end design fidelity and immersive gaming experiences.

How the Dell XPS 13 and the MSI Modern 14 compare to other laptops
"In the past, the XPS 13 was a hands-down contender for the best laptop on the market. But the Apple-silicon MacBook has since barrelled onto the scene, and it wipes the floor with most of the ultraportable Windows laptops that cross my desk on a daily basis. This XPS is no exception. Compared to the M2 MacBook Air, battery life is worse."
Alexander Tozzi, Ryan Lim, and John Peroramas | October 2023
"The MSI Modern 14 is okay for school use. It's very compact, so it's easy to carry around. It has a sharp display, a spacious keyboard, and a reasonably large touchpad. Its Intel 13th Gen CPU and integrated graphics can handle general productivity tasks like text processing and web browsing; however, don't expect to do anything intensive like 3D modeling or physics simulations. Unfortunately, the battery lasts less than five hours of light use, and the display doesn't get bright enough to combat glare."
