If you prioritize high performance for tasks like 3D rendering, machine learning, and engineering, and are okay with a higher price, the MSI Raider GE78, with its more powerful CPU and GPU, double the storage, and increased RAM, is a solid choice. Conversely, the ASUS ROG Strix G17 offers good performance for general use and gaming at a more affordable price, but with half the storage and RAM compared to the MSI. Both have large, high-resolution displays and fast refresh rates, but factor in heavier weights and modest battery life which impact portability, making them less ideal if you frequently move around. The MSI Raider GE78 is very good for general use, while the ASUS ROG Strix G17 is good.
The MSI Raider GE78 excels in general use over the ASUS ROG Strix G17 because it offers double the storage, twice as much RAM for multitasking, and a more capable main processor, which together enhance overall performance; it also comes with a higher-quality keyboard and superior speakers. Despite these advantages, it is less portable due to its slightly greater weight and thickness, and while it has a longer battery life, this might be less relevant if you mainly use your laptop while plugged in.

The MSI Raider GE78 is excellent for engineering and design, while the ASUS ROG Strix G17 is very good.
The MSI Raider GE78 outshines the ASUS ROG Strix G17 for engineering and design work primarily because it features a more powerful Intel i9 processor, double the RAM, and a more robust Nvidia RTX 4090 GPU, facilitating much faster processing and complex 3D rendering. Although the ASUS has a strong AMD Ryzen 9 CPU and a capable Nvidia RTX 4060 GPU, the MSI's superior screen brightness and higher GPU VRAM allow for better visual fidelity in detailed design work and more fluid multitasking.

The MSI Raider GE78 has a better screen than the ASUS ROG Strix G17 for gaming and AI, content creation, and software development.
The ASUS ROG Strix G17 and MSI Raider GE78 offer high-resolution displays with bright panels that make text and images crisp and clear, ideal for everyday tasks like browsing, document editing, and video streaming. For engineers and designers, both laptops' displays cover a broad range of colors, essential for accuracy in visual work, but the inclusion of multiple color gamuts ensures precise color reproduction, which is key for professional design work. However, despite their resolution and color accuracy, these laptops fall short for serious gaming and 3D work because their screens don't support high refresh rates, meaning they can't display as many frames per second, leading to less fluid motion in fast-paced games and animations.

"The Asus ROG Strix G17 is an attractive but unbalanced gaming laptop. Its potent AMD Ryzen 9 processor excels in 1080p gaming, but playing at 1440p leaves the middling GeForce RTX 4060 GPU shouldering most of the burden. The display is exceptionally colorful, which is handy for content creators, but since this is a gaming laptop it would be better served with improved HDR capabilities. If battery life isn't a priority, the Strix G17 could serve as a designer by day and a gamer by night."
"Performance-wise, the GE78 offers a significant boost over the GE77 for just slightly higher power consumption. You'll have to get the RTX 4080 or 4090 configurations to see the performance advantages, however, as the RTX 4070 is closer in performance to the older RTX 3080 Ti. In terms of design, some users might prefer the 16:9 minimalistic look of the older GE77 over the 16:10 retro-inspired GE78 and vice versa. We wouldn't call one better than the other in terms of aesthetics, but we'll give the edge to the GE78 for its stronger hinges and larger keys and clickpad."
