If watching movies and playing games in a dark environment is a priority, the Sony A90K is an excellent choice with its outstanding contrast and deep black levels. However, its screen does not get as bright, so it may not perform as well in very bright rooms. On the other hand, the Samsung QN85B offers a brighter screen, making it a better option for well-lit environments. It's also more affordable than the Sony. The Sony has superior viewing angles, but the Samsung is better at handling reflections. For the most part, the Sony shines in picture quality, especially for movies and HDR content due to better local dimming and black uniformity, whereas the Samsung is a more versatile choice for various types of content viewing in different room conditions. If budget is a concern and you mostly watch in brighter rooms, the Samsung QN85B could be your best bet. If you're willing to invest more for higher quality cinematic and gaming experiences in darker rooms, the Sony A90K would suit you better. Give Feedback

What Hi-Fi?

John Archer | February 2023
"Particularly key to this is the fact that black levels are unusually good, on a level we haven’t seen from any IPS TV before. Build quality is impressive too, with a gleaming silver metallic frame and stand, and enough heft to suggest plenty of quality innards. High dynamic range content jumps off the screen with enough luminosity and intensity to really sell what makes HDR special."

About Samsung

Samsung, a South Korean electronics manufacturer, holds the title of being the largest global TV vendor in terms of units sold. They offer a diverse lineup of TV products that cater to various budget ranges. A notable achievement in recent years is the development of Quantum Dots, a technology that enhances color reproduction, resulting in richer and more vibrant hues. Samsung TVs are well-regarded for their high manufacturing quality and user-friendly software, making them an excellent choice for consumers seeking an intuitive viewing experience.

About Sony

Sony stands as a highly experienced and widely trusted TV manufacturer, earning a reputation that surpasses all others. A Japanese company, Sony has been making TVs for far longs than it has been making Playstation game consoles. Sony's high-end TVs are often regarded as the ultimate choice for videophiles, representing the epitome of quality, albeit at a premium price point. Renowned for their advanced and precise motion handling, as well as their cutting-edge local dimming algorithms, Sony consistently delivers unparalleled performance in these areas. They include Google TV software with all their TV sets, which grants access to the largest selection of apps available and they also include Bravia Core which is a movie streaming platform specifically for Sony TVs that offers higher picture quality by using more bandwidth.
