The Samsung QN85B is in the upper midrange price bracket, offering a good overall picture quality with particularly excellent performance in bright rooms. This makes it suitable for well-lit environments. It excels in gaming due to its very low input lag and quick response time, making it a very good choice for gamers. Sports and fast-moving content are also displayed well, but it's not the best option for dark room viewing, as its dark room performance is just good. The TV supports HDR content nicely with very good HDR brightness and a wide color gamut, enhancing movie viewing. However, the sound quality is good but not top-tier, so some customers might want to consider a separate sound system for a more immersive audio experience. With an LCD 120Hz panel and effective motion processing, it provides a smooth viewing experience for most content. Give Feedback

Ratings by Category

Bright Room:
4.8
The Samsung QN85B is excellent for watching TV in a bright room due to its high SDR and HDR brightness levels, which ensure the screen remains visible even in well-lit conditions. Additionally, its very good reflections handling minimizes the impact of ambient light on the viewing experience, while its color performance maintains a broad range of colors even when brightness is increased.
News, Talk & Reality TV:
4.6
PerfectRec’s news, talk, & other TV score prioritizes upscaling, brightness, contrast, out of the box color accuracy, and screen uniformity. This is because almost all news and talk shows are created in Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) with lower resolutions, such as 720P and 1080P. The purpose of this prioritization is to ensure that lower resolution content looks good on a 4K display and to help you identify which TV will perform best when watching live TV via Cable, Satellite, or Antenna.
Gaming:
4.5
PerfectRec’s gaming score measures a TV's performance when it comes to playing video games. It is based on several factors that can significantly impact the quality of the gaming experience, including screen response time, input lag, and refresh rate. Screen response time is a critical factor that determines how quickly the TV can transition from one color to the next, while input lag measures the delay between the gaming console output and the TV display. Refresh rate refers to the number of times per second that the TV displays a new frame, which can impact the smoothness of the gaming experience. The gaming score also takes into account two other features: local dimming in gaming mode, which can enhance contrast and picture quality, and black frame insertion, which can reduce screen brightness and create a smoother gaming experience.
Cartoons & Animaton:
4.4
The Samsung QN85B is very good for watching cartoons and animation because it displays colors accurately without the need for calibration (colors out of the box), and it has a good color gamut, meaning it can produce a wide range of colors, which is essential for the vibrant palettes typically used in animated content. Additionally, aspects like color volume and gray uniformity, which are somewhat important, are also good, contributing to consistent and full-spectrum color representation across the screen.
Overall Picture:
4.2
PerfectRec developed this proprietary score designed to provide an overall assessment of a display's visual performance. It is a comprehensive metric that takes into account many quantitative measures of picture quality, including: contrast ratio, color gamut, color volume, color accuracy, local dimming, gray uniformity, black uniformity, viewing angle, reflections (glare) and color calibration. By combining multiple factors, this score offers a more nuanced and comprehensive evaluation of a display's capabilities than a single factor.
Movies & TV shows:
4.1
The Samsung QN85B is well-regarded for movies and cinematic content as it features an excellent local dimming capability and good out-of-the-box colors which enhance the overall picture quality; however, the TV has a mediocre black uniformity, which might affect viewing dark scenes. While the TV has a decent viewing angle and color volume, those seeking the best experience in a very bright room or with wide seating arrangements might find it less suitable.
Sports:
4.1
The Samsung QN85B is suited for watching sports due to its very good motion processing, ensuring fast-moving scenes are displayed smoothly, and very good response time, minimizing motion blur. Additionally, its very good reflection handling makes it easier to watch in bright rooms, while a decent viewing angle allows for a clear picture at various positions in the room.

What Hi-Fi?

John Archer | February 2023
"Particularly key to this is the fact that black levels are unusually good, on a level we haven’t seen from any IPS TV before. Build quality is impressive too, with a gleaming silver metallic frame and stand, and enough heft to suggest plenty of quality innards. High dynamic range content jumps off the screen with enough luminosity and intensity to really sell what makes HDR special."
