The HP Omen 17 is very good for engineering and design, while the HP EliteBook 845 G9 is good.
The HP Omen 17 offers better engineering and design capabilities due to its more powerful CPU, high-end Nvidia RTX 4080 GPU, and a higher screen resolution, which is essential for detail-oriented tasks, whereas the HP EliteBook 845 G9, though competent, has a less powerful AMD GPU and a lower resolution display, influencing overall performance and visual detail. However, the EliteBook is more portable and boasts a higher screen brightness and a quieter operating noise, making it a more balanced option for on-the-go use and environments where noise is a concern.

The HP Omen 17 has a better screen than the HP EliteBook 845 G9 for general use, gaming and AI, engineering and design, and software development.
For general use, the HP EliteBook 845 G9's screen offers vivid colors and sharpness thanks to its panel type and resolution, coupled with sufficient brightness for comfortable viewing, while the HP Omen 17's higher quality display enhances these aspects even more for a pleasing visual experience. When it comes to engineering and design, the EliteBook provides good coverage of color gamuts, ensuring accurate color reproduction necessary for precise work, but the HP Omen 17 doesn't offer as robust color accuracy. For gaming and 3D applications, however, the EliteBook falls short as it lacks a high refresh rate which is crucial for smooth visuals, a feature the HP Omen 17 also does not provide adequately, affecting the responsiveness and fluidity in these use cases.

How the HP EliteBook 845 G9 and the HP Omen 17 compare to other laptops
"The high-end version of the HP EliteBook 845 G9 with a Ryzen 9 PRO 6950HS, 32GB of RAM and a 1 TB SSD packs a lot of power, but is still quiet and cool enough to operate in noise-sensitive environments. Quiet, cool and drawing on a massive 40 watts from the APU at the same time, however, is not possible. The 14-incher only has a single-fan solution and it only just manages to keep an near unthrottled Ryzen 9 in check."
"The HP Omen 17 (2022) gaming laptop has a stylish case and hardware with lots of potential. The HP Omen 17 is a fairly unobtrusive gaming laptop. A material combination of plastic and metal gives the case a high stability and a quality surface feel. The unspectacular design is pleasing and is hardly indicative of the laptop's high performance potential. The Intel Core i7-12700H in particular is able to perform well once again. The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 Ti is also strong in the gaming notebook. Demanding games run smoothly in Full HD resolution. The HP Omen 17 is a good gaming laptop that delivers partly excellent performance. But even at this performance level, cheaper alternatives are available."
