The HP 17" Laptop, a somewhat more expensive option, offers a larger 17.3-inch display and a more powerful AMD Ryzen 7 processor, which is better suited for intensive tasks but is less portable due to its larger size and weight. On the other hand, the MSI Modern 14 is less expensive, more portable with its 14-inch display, lighter weight and offers decent performance with an AMD Ryzen 5 processor but may not handle demanding tasks as effectively as the HP. The HP 17" Laptop has a better screen than the MSI Modern 14 for engineering and design.
For general use, a fair screen quality in both the HP 17" and MSI Modern 14 suggests they have adequate resolution and brightness and an acceptable panel type, but they may not offer the best viewing experience for fine text and image details. In engineering and design work, the fair screen quality implies these laptops display a decent range of colors, but professionals who need precise color accuracy for tasks like photo editing might find the color gamuts lacking. For gaming and 3D, the poor rating likely stems from lower refresh rates, limiting the smoothness of motion, and while the resolution and panel type are serviceable, they don't offer the premium visual experience sought by enthusiasts and professionals in this realm.

The HP 17" Laptop and MSI Modern 14 are both only fair for gaming and AI.
The HP 17" Laptop with its Vega 8 graphics is slightly better for gaming and 3D tasks than the MSI Modern 14, which has Vega 7 graphics, but both are held back by their basic screen refresh rate of 60Hz, limiting smooth visuals in fast-paced games. Both laptops have similar screen quality and resolution, and while their integrated GPUs can manage less demanding titles, neither is ideal for intensive gaming due to their limitations in graphics performance and refresh rate.

How the HP 17" Laptop and the MSI Modern 14 compare to other laptops
"As far as starter laptops go, the HP Laptop 17 is a sound investment. Sure, it might not be the lightest of options, but what you get for the price is a well-rounded machine that fits multiple niches. Whether it be office duties that require you to multi-task between multiple programs, or study tasks in which you’ll spend hours browsing online, this laptop does it all. Plus, when it's time to unwind, you can watch your favorite shows or movies on a super-wide display. What's best of all is that you can do all this for about half a day on a single charge."
Alexander Tozzi, Ryan Lim, and John Peroramas | October 2023
"The MSI Modern 14 is okay for school use. It's very compact, so it's easy to carry around. It has a sharp display, a spacious keyboard, and a reasonably large touchpad. Its Intel 13th Gen CPU and integrated graphics can handle general productivity tasks like text processing and web browsing; however, don't expect to do anything intensive like 3D modeling or physics simulations. Unfortunately, the battery lasts less than five hours of light use, and the display doesn't get bright enough to combat glare."
