The ASUS Vivobook 15 is a budget-friendly and more portable option with decent performance for general use, such as web browsing, office tasks, and media consumption. It has a smaller screen and less power than the HP, offering lower storage capacity and RAM. On the other hand, the HP 17" Laptop is a bit more expensive with a larger screen, which is beneficial for multitasking and entertainment but reduces its portability. It comes with more storage space, more RAM, and a more powerful processor, making it suitable for more demanding tasks like engineering software, creative applications, and light gaming, but it has a slightly shorter battery life. The HP 17" Laptop is good for general use, while the ASUS Vivobook 15 is only fair.
The HP 17" Laptop generally offers better performance for general use due to its superior processor (AMD Ryzen 7 7730U) and double the RAM of the ASUS Vivobook 15, along with a significantly larger storage capacity and a higher quality screen that shows more colors accurately. However, the Asus Vivobook is lighter and more portable with somewhat longer battery life, which may suit users who prioritize mobility over raw performance and screen size.

The HP 17" Laptop and ASUS Vivobook 15 are both only fair for engineering and design, though the HP 17" Laptop is somewhat better.
The HP 17" Laptop boasts a superior AMD Ryzen 7 processor with Vega 8 graphics, doubled RAM, and a wider, higher brightness and color coverage screen, vital for engineering tasks and design work where performance and visual fidelity are key, in contrast to the ASUS Vivobook 15's more modest Intel i3 processor with UHD graphics, less RAM, and a screen with lower brightness and color representation. While the ASUS is lighter and thus more portable, the HP's larger screen and improved keyboard can better handle demanding applications at the expense of being heavier and slightly less convenient to carry around.

The HP 17" Laptop has a better screen than the ASUS Vivobook 15 for general use, engineering and design, content creation, and software development.
Both the ASUS Vivobook 15 and the HP 17" Laptop have panels that offer acceptable resolution and brightness for daily tasks like browsing and document editing, but they may lack wide color gamut coverage needed for precise engineering and design work. Despite being sufficient for casual use, their screen characteristics may not satisfy professionals who require accurate color rendition for sensitive design tasks. Furthermore, for gaming and 3D applications where a high refresh rate is crucial for smooth visuals, these laptops may fall short, potentially leading to less fluid motion and interaction in fast-paced game environments or during 3D rendering.

How the ASUS Vivobook 15 and the HP 17" Laptop compare to other laptops
"The Asus VivoBook 15 is a quiet office notebook with a strong screen. However, the VivoBook 15 still has room for improvement. Office and internet applications as well as simple games do not pose any major challenges for the VivoBook - this is ensured by the built-in combination of Ryzen 7 5700U APU and 16 GB of RAM. Heat and noise emissions are acceptable. But, the laptop has weaknesses that should not be present at this level: lack of keyboard lighting, a slow memory card reader, no fast USB-C port (USB 3.2 Gen 2 or Thunderbolt 4) with Power Delivery and DisplayPort. Battery runtimes can only be described as average."
"As far as starter laptops go, the HP Laptop 17 is a sound investment. Sure, it might not be the lightest of options, but what you get for the price is a well-rounded machine that fits multiple niches. Whether it be office duties that require you to multi-task between multiple programs, or study tasks in which you’ll spend hours browsing online, this laptop does it all. Plus, when it's time to unwind, you can watch your favorite shows or movies on a super-wide display. What's best of all is that you can do all this for about half a day on a single charge."
