If you prioritize higher storage capacity, better performance for tasks like 3D rendering or engineering, and a sharper display, the HP 14" Laptop with its AMD Ryzen processor would be preferred, though it is less affordable and slightly heavier. However, if budget and portability are more critical to you, and you're using the laptop for general tasks, then the Gateway 11.6" offers a more budget-friendly option with a smaller, lighter form factor, but with less power and a lower resolution screen. The HP 14" Laptop is only fair for engineering and design, while the Gateway 11.6" is poor.
The Gateway 11.6" laptop is limited in engineering and design use due to its basic Intel Celeron processor, minimal RAM, and inferior Intel UHD Graphics, all of which contribute to poor performance in demanding applications, complemented by a low-resolution screen that affects visual detail. Meanwhile, the HP 14" Laptop offers a more capable AMD Ryzen processor with better integrated graphics and double the RAM, alongside a higher-resolution screen, making it more suited for engineering tasks despite being heavier and less portable.

The HP 14" Laptop has a better screen than the Gateway 11.6" for general use, gaming and AI, engineering and design, content creation, and software development.
The Gateway's smaller screen with lower resolution and brightness hampers visibility and clarity across all uses, while the HP's larger screen offers better resolution and brightness for general tasks and engineering, but still lacks the wide color gamut professionals need for precise color work. Neither laptop is ideal for gaming or 3D as they don't have the high refresh rates necessary for smooth playback, despite HP's moderate advantage in resolution and panel quality. Overall, for those prioritizing general use and some engineering work the HP offers a suitable compromise, but dedicated users in engineering, design, and gaming may need to seek higher-spec models.

How the Gateway 11.6" and the HP 14" Laptop compare to other laptops
"This feels like an ideal laptop for someone who doesn’t want to spend a lot of money on a laptop and isn’t too bothered by things like build quality or construction. It’s a laptop that will be used to pay bills, keep track of expenses, do some online shopping, and will be tucked away in a spare bedroom/home office. It’s an appliance designed to do a job without fuss. It’s not a premium experience—the materials do feel a little cheap, the display won’t exactly wow you, and the battery life is nothing to write home about, especially if you’ve used more expensive devices. But overall it’s not too shabby, especially for the price."
