If your focus is on saving money and having a laptop that's more portable, the Dell Latitude 14 7490 could suit your needs—it's usually cheaper and has a smaller, lighter frame than the HP Victus 15. However, if you're interested in gaming or running graphics-intensive applications, the HP Victus 15, with its more powerful graphics card and higher refresh rate display, would be a better fit even though it's typically more expensive and heavier, which may affect its portability. The Latitude offers longer battery life, favouring users who need their device to last longer on a single charge, while the Victus leans toward performance at the expense of battery endurance. The Dell Latitude 14 7490 has a better screen than the HP Victus 15 for engineering and design, while the HP Victus 15 has a better screen for general use, and gaming and AI.
The Dell Latitude offers a display with higher resolution and superior color accuracy, making it suitable for precision tasks in engineering and design work, where color representation and detail are crucial. However, its moderate brightness and standard panel type are sufficient for everyday tasks but might not deliver the vibrant visuals desired in gaming or viewing fast-paced 3D content, for which high refresh rates are paramount. On the other hand, the HP Victus, with its good general visual quality and adequate color range, falls short for specialized engineering software that demands broader color gamuts, and its standard refresh rate isn't ideal for the smooth rendering needed in gaming and 3D applications.

How the Dell Latitude 14 7490 and the HP Victus 15 compare to other laptops
"The Dell Latitude 7490's got the speed you need (and then some), a keyboard that's comfortable enough for writing all day long and a battery that supports a full 8-hour workday. If only the display were brighter and it managed heat better. If you need every minute of battery life you can get, the extended-battery version of the Lenovo ThinkPad T480 lasts 8 hours longer than the Latitude 7490, but its display is much less colorful."
Olivier Martin, Ryan Lim, and Yannick Khong | March 2023
"The HP Victus 15 is great for gaming. It's available with Intel 12th Gen. CPUs and NVIDIA discrete graphics, which are powerful enough to provide a smooth gaming experience in demanding AAA titles at 1080p. It has a nice keyboard and a fast SSD, as well as Wi-Fi 6 and Ethernet connectivity for low-latency online gaming. Unfortunately, its 144Hz display has a slow response time causing noticeable ghosting, and it doesn't support variable refresh rate to reduce screen tearing."
