The Dell Alienware X17 R2 is pricier and offers high-end performance suitable for intensive tasks like gaming and 3D rendering, thanks to its powerful processor and top-tier graphics. It has a larger screen but is heavier, which may affect portability. On the other hand, the Lenovo Legion 5 15" is significantly more affordable with mid-range specs that are still capable for everyday use and moderate gaming. It has a higher resolution screen which is smaller and lighter, making it easier to carry around. If budget isn't a constraint and you need peak performance, go with the Dell; if you value portability and savings, the Lenovo is a smart pick. Give Feedback

The Dell Alienware X17 R2 is excellent for engineering and design, while the Lenovo Legion 5 15" is very good.
The Dell Alienware X17 R2 stands out for engineering and design due to its high-end Intel i9 processor, substantial RAM, and top-tier Nvidia RTX 3080 Ti graphics card, which together deliver excellent performance for demanding applications and graphical tasks alongside a quality screen; however, it is less portable with greater weight and size. In comparison, the Lenovo Legion 5 offers a sharp screen and a solid AMD Ryzen 7 processor with a capable Nvidia RTX 4060 GPU, which are sufficient for most engineering and design needs, and it's more portable, but it has half the RAM and a less powerful GPU than the Alienware, making it a hybrid between performance and mobility.

The Dell Alienware X17 R2 has a better screen than the Lenovo Legion 5 15" for general use, gaming and AI, engineering and design, software development, and content creation.
The Dell Alienware X17 R2 likely has superior resolution and brightness, making it suitable for everyday tasks, with a panel that renders crisp and vivid images essential for engineering and design but it may have a lower refresh rate that is less optimal for the fast-paced visuals required in gaming and 3D. The Lenovo Legion 5, while still offering a high-quality display for routine use and adequate color accuracy for most engineering and design work, might fall short for gaming and 3D scenarios that benefit from higher refresh rates. Both laptops seem well-equipped for general and professional tasks, but serious gamers or those heavily involved in 3D work may need to look for displays specifically tailored to those needs.

How the Dell Alienware X17 R2 and the Lenovo Legion 5 15" compare to other laptops
"The Alienware x17 R2 recognizes targets a significantly higher TGP of 175 W for a roughly 30 percent performance boost over laptops running on the ~100 W GeForce RTX 3080 Ti like the Razer Blade 15 or Gigabyte Aero YE5. Similar results can be found through the CPU as well. This single aspect of the Alienware is perhaps the biggest differentiating factor between it and other ultrathin gaming laptops. Of course, the "performance at all cost" approach comes with drawbacks. Power consumption in particular is through the roof and battery life suffers because of it even when on the lowest performance settings."
"The Lenovo Legion 5 15 is an affordable gaming laptop with a lot of power. The new AMD processor Ryzen 7 5800H offers plenty of performance and it is also very efficient. The combination with the fast 130W version of the GeForce RTX 3060 ensures high gaming performance. We also like the fast 165 Hz display with the 1080p resolution. The automatic graphics switching causes some problems with stutters, which are very annoying. If you do not need long battery runtimes, you should definitely deactivate the hybrid graphics mode in Lenovo's Vantage app. The Legion 5 15 is never silent."
