The Dell Alienware m17 R5 has better performance, which is suited for intensive tasks like gaming, 3D rendering, and engineering work due to its powerful processor and GPU. However, it's heavier and has a shorter battery life, making it less portable than the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 17". On the other hand, the Lenovo is more affordable, lighter, and offers longer battery life which makes it a better option for general use and portability but it lacks the high performance of the Alienware for tasks such as gaming or professional-grade applications. Consider your primary use case and budget when making the decision. Give Feedback

The Dell Alienware m17 R5 and Lenovo IdeaPad 3 17" are both good for general use, though the Dell Alienware m17 R5 is somewhat better.
The Dell Alienware m17 R5 is equipped with a superior processor and more RAM, offering better performance for multitasking and demanding applications, but it is heavier and has a shorter battery life, which reduces portability compared to the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 17", which, though less powerful, is lighter and has a longer battery life, making it more suitable for on-the-go use. Both laptops feature a 17.3 inch IPS display with the same resolution, delivering good screen quality for general use, but the Alienware's higher refresh rate is an advantage for smoother visuals especially in gaming and video playback.

The Dell Alienware m17 R5 is good for gaming and AI, while the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 17" is only fair.
The Dell Alienware m17 R5 excels in gaming and 3D primarily because it is equipped with a powerful Nvidia RTX 3060 graphics card and features a very high screen refresh rate, enhancing fluidity and responsiveness in visual tasks. In contrast, the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 17" has a less capable integrated AMD GPU and a standard screen refresh rate, making it less suitable for demanding gaming and 3D applications.

The Dell Alienware m17 R5 is very good for engineering and design, while the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 17" is only fair.
The Dell Alienware m17 R5 outperforms the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 for engineering and design use primarily due to its superior CPU, double the RAM, and a more powerful dedicated GPU, which are crucial for demanding tasks, along with a high-quality screen. Meanwhile, the Lenovo IdeaPad 3, though more portable and with a good screen, falls behind in performance with a less powerful integrated GPU and lower RAM, making it less suited for intensive engineering work.

The Dell Alienware m17 R5 has a better screen than the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 17" for general use, gaming and AI, engineering and design, and content creation.
For general use, both the Dell Alienware m17 R5 and Lenovo IdeaPad 3 17" offer screens with adequate resolution and brightness, providing comfortable viewing and clarity for everyday tasks like browsing and document editing. Engineers and designers would find the color accuracy and range offered by these laptops suitable for most tasks, except for those requiring highly precise color representation. However, gamers and professionals working with 3D graphics might find the lower refresh rates on these screens less ideal, as they can lead to less fluid motion and slower response times during fast-paced games or high-frame-rate 3D simulations.

How the Dell Alienware m17 R5 and the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 17" compare to other laptops
"Overall, the all-AMD system in the Alienware m17 R5 is impressive, especially the graphics performance. However, various driver issues and unnecessary inconsistencies prevent us from truly enjoying such a potent gaming machine. In addition to strong 3D performance, we particularly like the build quality, the fairly bright UHD display with high color space coverage, and the fact that the gamer is often quiet when not under load and also rather quieter than some competitors under load."
"The Lenovo IdeaPad 3 17" defies expectations. Indeed, it is just a minor upgrade over last year. However, this doesn’t make the laptop any less terrific. It’s got a great performance, courtesy of the Ryzen 5x25U processors. In addition, you get a pretty good battery life. Perhaps, the 2-hour decrease in video playback, compared to last year is not great, but still, 10 hours of Web browsing and 7 hours of video playback is okay for 17-inch notebooks."
