The Dell Alienware m17 R5 is often somewhat more expensive and offers a larger screen, higher battery capacity, better build quality, and superior performance for engineering tasks compared to the MSI Cyborg 15. While the MSI Cyborg 15 is often somewhat less expensive and more portable with a smaller form factor and lighter weight, its performance in general use and engineering tasks is lower, and it offers a shorter battery life. If budget is less of a concern and you need a laptop for demanding tasks like gaming and engineering, the Alienware m17 R5 is the better option. However, if you prioritize portability and are looking for a more budget-friendly option, the MSI Cyborg 15 might suit your needs, though it comes with compromises in performance and battery life. The Dell Alienware m17 R5 is very good for engineering and design, while the MSI Cyborg 15 is good.
The Dell Alienware m17 R5 stands out for engineering and design due to its stronger CPU, double the RAM, and a high-capacity battery, combined with a larger screen which has better color accuracy, making it ideal for intensive tasks and visual clarity. In contrast, the MSI Cyborg 15, although it has a more recent GPU, is more lightweight and portable with excellent heat management, but it offers less RAM and a lower-capacity battery, which may limit performance and usage duration for demanding engineering applications.

The Dell Alienware m17 R5 has a better screen than the MSI Cyborg 15 for general use, gaming and AI, engineering and design, and content creation.
The Dell Alienware m17 R5 boasts a higher resolution with superior brightness, making for vivid displays and crisp visuals suitable for both everyday activities and detail-oriented tasks like engineering, but its screen refresh rate isn’t optimal for the fast-paced, fluid imagery required in gaming and 3D applications. The MSI Cyborg 15 offers adequate clarity and brightness for general and engineering purposes, accommodating casual and professional work, but lacks in color gamut coverage which might not meet the needs of professionals dealing with color-critical tasks. For gaming and 3D purposes, both laptops fall short due to their less suitable refresh rates, which are crucial for smooth motion but don't impact tasks like web browsing or office productivity as much.

How the Dell Alienware m17 R5 and the MSI Cyborg 15 compare to other laptops
"Overall, the all-AMD system in the Alienware m17 R5 is impressive, especially the graphics performance. However, various driver issues and unnecessary inconsistencies prevent us from truly enjoying such a potent gaming machine. In addition to strong 3D performance, we particularly like the build quality, the fairly bright UHD display with high color space coverage, and the fact that the gamer is often quiet when not under load and also rather quieter than some competitors under load."
"The focus of the MSI Cyborg 15 lies on a compromise of performance, mobility, and power consumption. Due to the reduced performance settings, the CPU and GPU perform below their capabilities. Nonetheless, their computing power is still sufficient for FHD gaming at high to maximum settings even then. The power consumption, which is low for a gaming laptop, can be translated into a good battery life. Realistic values of 7 to 8 h are still possible, despite the relatively small battery capacity of 53.5 Wh. Unfortunately the USB-C port doesn't offer any support for Power Delivery, which would be a sensible feature in the case of the Cyborg."
