If performance for tasks like gaming, 3D rendering, or machine learning is a priority and the higher cost is not an issue, the Dell Alienware m17 R5 is better equipped with powerful components and a larger display suited for demanding uses. However, it is less portable due to greater weight and size. On the other hand, the Dell Inspiron 15 3511, being more affordable and lightweight, is more suitable for everyday tasks and easier to carry around, but it lacks the high-end graphics and processing capabilities of the Alienware, making it less suitable for intensive tasks. When selecting a laptop, for general use, prioritize a laptop with an IPS or OLED panel with high resolution and brightness, which will offer vivid colors and great viewing angles. For engineering and design work, a laptop with broad color coverage, such as high percentages of DCI-P3 or Adobe RGB, is crucial to accurately represent colors in your projects. On the other hand, if gaming or working with 3D applications is your priority, choose a laptop with a high refresh rate display to ensure smooth visuals, while also considering a decent resolution and a quality panel type for overall image clarity.

How the Dell Alienware m17 R5 and the Dell Inspiron 15 3511 compare to other laptops
"Overall, the all-AMD system in the Alienware m17 R5 is impressive, especially the graphics performance. However, various driver issues and unnecessary inconsistencies prevent us from truly enjoying such a potent gaming machine. In addition to strong 3D performance, we particularly like the build quality, the fairly bright UHD display with high color space coverage, and the fact that the gamer is often quiet when not under load and also rather quieter than some competitors under load."
"The Dell Inspiron 15 3000 (3511) is a solid, if unremarkable, 15-inch budget laptop. It improves on many of the issues we had with the previous 3505 model, and with the inclusion of Windows 11, the 3511 is already a step above its competition. The lack of a USB-C port, the subpar speakers, and the dim display are drawbacks to factor in, but it's still one of the better 15-inch budget laptops on the market, especially when you consider it's under $400."
