For a balance of performance and portability with a larger screen, the ASUS Zenbook Pro 17 is a strong contender, offering a high-performance AMD Ryzen processor and a dedicated Nvidia GPU, which is great for engineering tasks and general use. Its 17.3-inch display with a Full HD resolution provides ample screen real estate, though the 60Hz refresh rate may not satisfy avid gamers. The laptop's slim design and longer battery life enhance its portability, making it suitable for on-the-go professionals. On the other hand, the Lenovo Legion Pro 5i (2024) is designed with gaming in mind, featuring a more powerful Nvidia RTX 4070 GPU and a high-refresh-rate 16-inch QHD display, which delivers superior visuals for gaming, 3D rendering, and machine learning tasks. The Intel i7 processor and 16GB of RAM ensure smooth multitasking, though the RAM is less upgradeable compared to the ASUS. The Legion's build is more robust, catering to intense gaming sessions, but this comes at the cost of increased weight and reduced battery life, slightly impacting its portability. Ultimately, if you prioritize a larger screen, longer battery life, and the versatility to handle a variety of tasks including engineering work, the ASUS Zenbook Pro 17 is the way to go. However, if your focus is on gaming and high-performance graphics tasks, and you're willing to compromise on battery life and weight, the Lenovo Legion Pro 5i (2024) would be the better choice. PCMag

Brian Westover | August 2023
"The midpriced Lenovo Legion Pro 5i Gen 8 follows some of our favorite gaming machines, including last year's model and the higher-end Legion Pro 7i Gen 8 tested earlier this year. But pedigree doesn't count for much in the computer world, and gaming laptops require a certain level of power and graphics performance to justify their prices. The Pro 5i Gen 8 just doesn't do that, offering middling CPU and GPU performance rather than the sort of muscle that would make it a great value."
