Considering your needs, the Apple MacBook Air (2020) offers a lightweight design for superior portability, longer battery life, excellent build quality, and silent operation due to its fanless design. It's well-suited for general use and it has a high-quality display with better color accuracy. In contrast, the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5i provides more storage and RAM, a larger screen, and additional ports, which may benefit engineering tasks and 3D/machine learning work. However, it's heavier and might not provide the same level of display quality as the MacBook Air. The MacBook Air is pricier, while the IdeaPad Slim 5i is generally less expensive and may offer better value if the price is a critical factor and the additional specs align with your requirements. The Apple MacBook Air has a better screen than the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5i for general use, AI, engineering and design, software development, and content creation.
The MacBook Air, with its higher resolution and brightness, along with a quality panel type, provides a vibrant and clear display that caters well to general use and engineering tasks where accurate colors are crucial. However, its refresh rate is not high enough to meet the demands of 3D applications, which require smooth motion rendering. The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5i, while offering a decent display for everyday tasks and work in engineering, lacks the advanced color gamut and screen brightness of the MacBook Air, and its moderate specifications also lead to subpar experiences in gaming and 3D scenarios where high refresh rates are essential.

How the Apple MacBook Air (2020) and the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5i compare to other laptops
"The Apple MacBook Air M2 Entry is a very good, but too expensive daily MacBook. The new MacBook Air M2 is undoubtedly once again a very good mobile companion, but we are still a little bit disappointed on a very high level, which is definitely connected with the increased price point. The new chassis is extremely slim and the front edge is no problem during typing, but the bezels are pretty wide for a modern device and in addition with the vertical space required for the notch, the new Air has larger footprint than some Windows rivals."
"The device is made for average work loads and if your work has a lot to do with online browsing, using apps that are not power-hungry and streaming videos. The looks are really good and the device in itself is not a heavy one. And with Intel 11th-gen Core processor, you might sail through most of your work without complaints."
