The Acer Aspire 5 17 is a more affordable, lighter option, ideal for general use with a decent battery life, making it suitable for on-the-go activities. The Dell Alienware m17 R5 offers a significantly more powerful experience suitable for intensive gaming, 3D rendering, and engineering tasks, but it comes with a higher price tag, a heavier build, and shorter battery life. The Alienware model also features higher gaming performance and screen quality, which may be beneficial for creative professionals. If portability is less of a concern and you need higher performance for demanding tasks, the Alienware is the better choice, whereas if you value a balance between cost and everyday performance, with good portability, opt for the Acer Aspire. The Dell Alienware m17 R5 has a better screen than the Acer Aspire 5 17 for general use, gaming and AI, engineering and design, and software development.
If you prioritize screen sharpness and clarity for day-to-day tasks or office applications, Acer Aspire 5 17's fair screen may suit you, but it isn't ideal for high-end visuals or color-sensitive work. In contrast, the Dell Alienware m17 R5 offers good screen fidelity with a broader color range, making it suitable for engineering or design work that demands accuracy in color representation. However, for a smooth gaming or 3D modeling experience, neither laptop’s screen is optimal due to lower refresh rates that may lead to less fluid movement on screen.

How the Acer Aspire 5 17 and the Dell Alienware m17 R5 compare to other laptops
"The Acer Aspire 5 17 laptop shows the expected strengths in the test. Besides the usual high build quality, the configuration convinces in most benchmarks and tests. The combination of CPU, GPU, and RAM is absolutely sufficient for the everyday office and browsing tasks of a laptop. It also renders the odd game passably if the requirements aren't too high. We liked the matte display in the test as well as the fairly manageable dimensions despite the screen size. It can also be used outdoors, even if it's certainly not a laptop designed for mobility."
"Overall, the all-AMD system in the Alienware m17 R5 is impressive, especially the graphics performance. However, various driver issues and unnecessary inconsistencies prevent us from truly enjoying such a potent gaming machine. In addition to strong 3D performance, we particularly like the build quality, the fairly bright UHD display with high color space coverage, and the fact that the gamer is often quiet when not under load and also rather quieter than some competitors under load."
