The Acer Aspire 5 17 may cost less than the ASUS Vivobook S 15, but the ASUS model typically offers double the storage and memory, a more powerful AMD Ryzen processor, and a slightly larger battery. However, the Acer is equipped with an equally capable processor for general use, has a larger screen, and includes a numeric keypad which might be valuable for productivity tasks. The ASUS is lighter and more portable, making it a better option if mobility is key. For those prioritizing longer battery life or enhanced performance for tasks such as 3D rendering, machine learning, or gaming, the ASUS might be a superior choice. On the other hand, if screen size and savings are more important than portability and high-end performance, consider the Acer. Both run Windows 11 Home and have a similar build quality and design. The ASUS Vivobook S 15 has a better screen than the Acer Aspire 5 17 for content creation, and software development.
For general use, both the Acer Aspire 5 17 and ASUS Vivobook S 15 offer adequately bright and clear displays, but their resolutions may not be the highest available, which makes them just fair for everyday tasks like browsing and video consumption. When it comes to engineering and design work, which often requires accurate color representation, both laptops have fair screens, likely because they cover a decent range of color gamuts, but may not fully reach the professional standards set by DCI-P3 and Adobe RGB. Lastly, for gaming and 3D rendering, the importance of a high refresh rate is critical for smooth visuals, and it seems both laptops fall short in this aspect, along with having moderate resolution and panel types that are less suited for these high-intensity visual tasks.

The ASUS Vivobook S 15 and Acer Aspire 5 17 are both only fair for gaming and AI.
The Acer Aspire 5 17 and ASUS Vivobook S 15 are both rated as fair for gaming and 3D because their GPUs (Intel i5-1335U Iris Xe and AMD Ryzen 7 5800H Vega 8, respectively) and screen refresh rates (both 60Hz) provide decent but not top-tier gaming performance. However, the Vivobook S 15’s CPU is more robust and it offers better screen quality, which may enhance the gaming experience despite the similar GPU capabilities.

How the Acer Aspire 5 17 and the ASUS Vivobook S 15 compare to other laptops
"The Acer Aspire 5 17 laptop shows the expected strengths in the test. Besides the usual high build quality, the configuration convinces in most benchmarks and tests. The combination of CPU, GPU, and RAM is absolutely sufficient for the everyday office and browsing tasks of a laptop. It also renders the odd game passably if the requirements aren't too high. We liked the matte display in the test as well as the fairly manageable dimensions despite the screen size. It can also be used outdoors, even if it's certainly not a laptop designed for mobility."
"Internals make Asus VivoBook S15 laptop a compelling option. The Asus multimedia laptop may look rather below-average with its modest black chassis, lack of a dedicated GPU, limited RAM and meagre port selection without Thunderbolt support. But your impression of the device will start changing once you set your eyes on its high-contrast OLED capable of producing deep blacks and highly accurate colours. And your opinion will change completely when the VivoBook is switched on. The AMD CPU can effortlessly keep up with powerful rivals from Intel. The integrated Radeon graphics blows away Intel's iGPU when it comes to graphics workloads such as rendering and simpler games."
