The Acer Aspire 5 17 is only fair for engineering and design, while the Acer Aspire 3 Spin 14 is poor.
The Acer Aspire 3 Spin 14 and the Acer Aspire 5 17 are 'fair' for engineering and design primarily because both have modest CPU and GPU that can handle average computational loads but may struggle with high-end engineering simulations or 3D rendering. The Spin 14 offers better portability and a touchscreen for hands-on design tasks, while the Aspire 5 has a larger screen and better speaker quality for multimedia presentations and designs, with neither excelling in gaming or screen color accuracy.

The Acer Aspire 5 17 has a better screen than the Acer Aspire 3 Spin 14 for content creation, and software development.
For general use, both the Acer Aspire 3 Spin 14 and Acer Aspire 5 17 provide satisfactory screen quality with adequate resolution and brightness, but they may not have the premium panel technology that would make them stand out. While these models offer fair screen quality for engineering and design due to adequate resolution and panel type, they might not cover a wide color gamut, which is crucial for accurate color representation in these fields. Gamers and professionals working with 3D graphics would find the screen quality lacking on both models, as they do not possess a high refresh rate that is critical for smooth visuals, though their resolution and panel type are reasonable for less demanding tasks.

How the Acer Aspire 3 Spin 14 and the Acer Aspire 5 17 compare to other laptops
Olivier Martin, Ryan Lim, and Yannick Khong | November 2023
"The Acer Aspire 3 Spin 14 is okay for school use. It feels reasonably well-built, and its compact design makes it easy to carry around. The battery lasts around seven hours of light use, so you only have to plug it in for a short time to get through a typical school day. The overall user experience is so-so; the display looks sharp but dim, and the touchpad is fairly responsive, albeit small."
"The Acer Aspire 5 17 laptop shows the expected strengths in the test. Besides the usual high build quality, the configuration convinces in most benchmarks and tests. The combination of CPU, GPU, and RAM is absolutely sufficient for the everyday office and browsing tasks of a laptop. It also renders the odd game passably if the requirements aren't too high. We liked the matte display in the test as well as the fairly manageable dimensions despite the screen size. It can also be used outdoors, even if it's certainly not a laptop designed for mobility."
