The Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 13" is more budget-friendly and offers good performance for everyday tasks, its portability, and longer battery life make it ideal for general use and on-the-go productivity. In contrast, the MSI Raider GE78 is designed for high-performance tasks like gaming, 3D rendering, machine learning, and engineering software; it's more powerful but also heavier and may have shorter battery life, making it less portable. If your primary concern is saving money and having a lightweight, day-to-day laptop, go for the Surface Laptop 5. If you require top-tier performance for resource-intensive applications and gaming, and are okay with the added cost and reduced portability, the MSI Raider GE78 would be the better choice. The MSI Raider GE78 is very good for general use, while the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 13" is good.
The Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 13" is appreciated for its portability and solid performance for everyday tasks, given its lightweight design and capable CPU and RAM configuration, but the battery life is less impressive compared to other aspects. On the other hand, the MSI Raider GE78, while offering exceptional performance with a more powerful CPU and double the RAM, is less portable and has a shorter battery life, making it better suited for users who need top-tier performance and don't mind less mobility and more frequent charging.

The MSI Raider GE78 has a better screen than the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 13" for general use, gaming and AI, engineering and design, content creation, and software development.
When considering laptops for general use, the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 13" provides a clear and bright display with a high resolution, making it visually appealing for everyday tasks, but the MSI Raider GE78 offers an even better visual experience due to its superior brightness and resolution. For engineering and design, where color accuracy is crucial, both laptops have high-quality screens that cover a broad range of colors, but the MSI Raider GE78 stands out with more complete color gamut coverage, offering more precise hues for professional work. However, for gaming and 3D applications, both laptops fall short due to lower refresh rates, which impact how smooth motion appears on screen; gamers typically prefer laptops with higher refresh rates, which neither of these models prioritize.

"The Surface Laptop 5 remains afloat as a solid machine. It's just not one that stands out in any particular way. Just like the last one. The biggest upgrade were some new components, but they perform in the same range as other laptops with them, and frequently at the bottom of that range. I suspect Microsoft's settings are very conservative to help keep cooling and battery life within reason in the older chassis design."
"Performance-wise, the GE78 offers a significant boost over the GE77 for just slightly higher power consumption. You'll have to get the RTX 4080 or 4090 configurations to see the performance advantages, however, as the RTX 4070 is closer in performance to the older RTX 3080 Ti. In terms of design, some users might prefer the 16:9 minimalistic look of the older GE77 over the 16:10 retro-inspired GE78 and vice versa. We wouldn't call one better than the other in terms of aesthetics, but we'll give the edge to the GE78 for its stronger hinges and larger keys and clickpad."
