The Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 with its high-resolution and taller screen can be better for productivity and reading. Its slightly lighter design aids portability, while its impressive build quality provides a premium feel. However, you pay more for these features. The MSI Modern 14 offers good value, with decent performance for everyday tasks, and it has additional ports which could be practical for connecting more devices. It's slightly heavier than the Surface, which might affect portability slightly, but also generally costs less. Consider if portability, screen quality, and build are worth the extra cost or if the MSI's value and connectivity meet your needs more effectively. Give Feedback

The Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 13" has a better screen than the MSI Modern 14 for general use, gaming and AI, engineering and design, and content creation.
The Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 13" excels in general use and engineering due to its high-resolution display and strong color accuracy, which are crucial for sharp imagery and precise color work. However, its lower refresh rate hinders its performance for 3D applications and gaming, where smoother motion is key. On the other hand, the MSI Modern 14, while adequate for casual use and professional tasks with its fair resolution and color representation, is also not suited for gaming or 3D design because of its modest refresh rate and less vibrant color gamut compared to higher-end panels.

How the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 13" and the MSI Modern 14 compare to other laptops
"The Surface Laptop 5 remains afloat as a solid machine. It's just not one that stands out in any particular way. Just like the last one. The biggest upgrade were some new components, but they perform in the same range as other laptops with them, and frequently at the bottom of that range. I suspect Microsoft's settings are very conservative to help keep cooling and battery life within reason in the older chassis design."
Alexander Tozzi, Ryan Lim, and John Peroramas | October 2023
"The MSI Modern 14 is okay for school use. It's very compact, so it's easy to carry around. It has a sharp display, a spacious keyboard, and a reasonably large touchpad. Its Intel 13th Gen CPU and integrated graphics can handle general productivity tasks like text processing and web browsing; however, don't expect to do anything intensive like 3D modeling or physics simulations. Unfortunately, the battery lasts less than five hours of light use, and the display doesn't get bright enough to combat glare."
