The Lenovo ThinkPad Z16 is a premium choice that offers high-performance components suitable for intensive engineering tasks, 3D rendering, and machine learning with a larger, high-resolution OLED screen that is excellent for color-sensitive work. However, it is heavier and pricier than the Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 3, which is more portable and affordable, making it a good fit for general use and on-the-go productivity despite its lower power. The Surface Laptop also has a touchscreen with a taller aspect ratio that can be better for reading and web browsing, but if performance and screen quality are crucial, the Lenovo ThinkPad Z16 is the better option. The Lenovo ThinkPad Z16 is very good for general use, while the Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 3 is good.
The Lenovo ThinkPad Z16 excels in general use due to its high-resolution OLED screen, robust RAM and CPU, which facilitate multitasking and smooth operation, though it is less portable and heavier compared to the Surface. The Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 3, while offering greater portability thanks to its lighter weight and smaller size, falls short in performance and screen quality due to its less powerful CPU, lower RAM, and less impressive screen resolution and color coverage.

The Lenovo ThinkPad Z16 and Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 3 are both only fair for gaming and AI, though the Lenovo ThinkPad Z16 is somewhat better.
The Lenovo ThinkPad Z16's dedicated AMD RX 6500M graphics card provides stronger gaming and 3D capabilities compared to the Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 3's integrated Intel i5-1235U Iris Xe graphics, which offer more modest performance in these tasks. Additionally, the ThinkPad Z16's larger screen size and higher screen quality contribute to a more immersive gaming and 3D experience over the Surface Laptop Go 3.

The Lenovo ThinkPad Z16 is very good for engineering and design, while the Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 3 is only fair.
The Lenovo ThinkPad Z16 outperforms the Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 3 for engineering and design use due to its superior processor, more RAM, and a higher-end GPU, along with a better screen quality that features a higher resolution OLED panel. While the Surface Laptop Go 3 is lighter and more portable, its lower-powered CPU, less RAM, integrated graphics, and a lower resolution IPS display make it less suitable for demanding tasks and high-quality visual work.

The Lenovo ThinkPad Z16 has a better screen than the Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 3 for general use, gaming and AI, engineering and design, software development, and content creation.
For general use, the ThinkPad Z16's high-resolution display and excellent brightness provide vivid and clear images, making text and graphics sharp; the Surface Laptop Go has a lower resolution but still offers good clarity and brightness for everyday tasks. In engineering and design, the Z16 excels with a wider color gamut, ensuring that colors in detailed projects are accurate and vibrant, which is essential, but the Surface Laptop still performs adequately with decent color representation. However, for gaming and 3D applications, both laptops fall short due to their lower refresh rates, which can't deliver the smooth visuals that fast-paced games and fluid 3D rendering require, although their resolutions and panel types are serviceable for casual use.

How the Lenovo ThinkPad Z16 and the Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 3 compare to other laptops
"Lenovo’s ThinkPad Z16 tries has some success in its effort to tweak the ThinkPad formula. The laptop is attractive, yet still tame, and material quality is on par with the best Windows competition. I also like the smooth, responsive haptic touchpad and the wide range of modern connectivity. Yet the Z16 doesn’t fix ThinkPad’s typical weakness: value. Starting around $1,550, and more typically near $1,700, the Z16 finds itself facing alternatives that have better performance or an improved display for the same price, or less."
"When it comes to affordably priced laptops, the numbers after the dollar sign are crucially important—more so than in any other price category. By increasing the starting price of its Laptop Go line by $200 and not changing much else, Microsoft irrevocably altered the calculus surrounding the decision of whether to buy the Surface Laptop Go 3. Sure, it has a newer processor and longer battery life, but don’t think for a second you’re not paying dearly for that extra RAM and SSD capacity at that new price."
