The MSI Katana 15 is good for gaming and AI, while the Lenovo Slim 7 16 is only fair.
The MSI Katana 15 outperforms the Lenovo Slim 7 16 in gaming and 3D applications mainly because it has a more powerful Nvidia RTX 4060 GPU compared to the RTX 3050 in the Lenovo, which is critical for graphic-intensive tasks. Additionally, the MSI has a higher screen refresh rate, boosting its suitability for fast-paced games, while the Lenovo's higher resolution screen offers better overall quality but at a lower refresh rate less ideal for gaming.

The Lenovo Slim 7 16 has a better screen than the MSI Katana 15 for general use, gaming and AI, engineering and design, and software development.
For general use, the Lenovo Slim 7 16's high-resolution, bright display with a superior panel type makes for clearer, more vibrant visuals, while the MSI Katana 15's more modest specifications in these areas result in adequate but less impressive image quality. The Lenovo's edge in screen quality for engineering and design applications comes from its broader color gamuts, enabling more precise color representation which is essential for design accuracy, whereas the MSI Katana 15, with fair color coverage, meets basic requirements but doesn't excel. However, for gaming and 3D, both laptops have screens that lag due to lower refresh rates, affecting how smooth motion appears, an important factor for immersive gameplay and fluid 3D rendering.

How the Lenovo Slim 7 16 and the MSI Katana 15 compare to other laptops
"At $1,011, the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 7 Pro is a real bargain among full-sized laptops, with a handsome 16-inch, 16:10 aspect ratio touch screen, a speedy CPU, a comfortable keyboard, ample memory, and a roomy solid-state drive. It's not a blazing gaming rig or mobile workstation, but it doesn't pretend to be. Its biggest negative is that it may be hard to find—during our review, it sold out and was marked "Temporarily Unavailable" on Lenovo's site."
"The MSI Katana 15 B12 combines a Gen12 CPU with an RTX 4050, which is actually not a bad idea for a budget gamer. The CPU is anything but bad and the GPU in the Katana 15 proves to be significantly more efficient than last year's models. However, our main point of criticism for budget gamers is the price: while you can get budget laptops with RTX 3060 from around US$800, you pay a whole US$1,499.99 here! The efficiency advantages of the RTX 4050 do not justify this price premium."
