If the lower price point and stronger performance for gaming or heavy tasks are priorities, the Lenovo Legion 5 15" may be the right choice, despite being bulkier and heavier, which affects portability. On the other hand, if portability and a premium build are more important, and you're focused on general use and lighter tasks, the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 13" with its lighter and sleeker design could be preferable, despite its higher price. The Surface Laptop is also likely to offer better battery life, making it more suitable for on-the-go use, whereas the Legion's battery performance typically falls behind more portable options. The Lenovo Legion 5 15" is good for gaming and AI, while the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 13" is only fair.
The Lenovo Legion 5 15" provides a superior gaming and 3D experience due to its more powerful Nvidia RTX 4060 GPU and a higher screen refresh rate of 165Hz, which are crucial for smooth and detailed gaming visuals. In contrast, the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 13" offers lower performance for these tasks with its integrated Intel Iris Xe graphics and a standard refresh rate of 60Hz, though it may have a more portable and sleek design.

The Lenovo Legion 5 15" is very good for engineering and design, while the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 13" is good.
The Lenovo Legion 5 15" typically has a powerful CPU, abundant RAM, and a dedicated GPU, making it well-suited for demanding engineering tasks, while its larger screen provides better visual clarity for intricate designs; however, its portability is compromised due to its size and weight. On the other hand, the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 13" is more portable with a high-quality keyboard and quieter operation, but with less emphasis on an advanced GPU, its performance for graphic-intensive engineering work is good but not as robust as the Lenovo.

The Lenovo Legion 5 15" has a better screen than the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 13" for general use, gaming and AI, and engineering and design.
The Lenovo Legion 5 15" likely has a high-resolution display and good brightness, which makes it ideal for general use, while the rich color gamuts benefit precision tasks in engineering and design. The Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 13" may offer similar advantages in terms of panel quality and color accuracy, catering well to both general use and professional design work. However, for gaming and 3D applications, both laptops may have lower refresh rates, which, coupled with the moderate importance of resolution and panel type, lead to a less optimal experience in visually demanding and fast-paced scenarios.

How the Lenovo Legion 5 15" and the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 13" compare to other laptops
"The Lenovo Legion 5 15 is an affordable gaming laptop with a lot of power. The new AMD processor Ryzen 7 5800H offers plenty of performance and it is also very efficient. The combination with the fast 130W version of the GeForce RTX 3060 ensures high gaming performance. We also like the fast 165 Hz display with the 1080p resolution. The automatic graphics switching causes some problems with stutters, which are very annoying. If you do not need long battery runtimes, you should definitely deactivate the hybrid graphics mode in Lenovo's Vantage app. The Legion 5 15 is never silent."
"The Surface Laptop 5 remains afloat as a solid machine. It's just not one that stands out in any particular way. Just like the last one. The biggest upgrade were some new components, but they perform in the same range as other laptops with them, and frequently at the bottom of that range. I suspect Microsoft's settings are very conservative to help keep cooling and battery life within reason in the older chassis design."
