If you prioritize portability and value, the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 is a good choice as it is less expensive and has a longer battery life, making it suitable for general use. However, if your needs include intensive engineering, 3D rendering, machine learning or gaming and you're willing to invest more for top performance, the MSI Raider GE78 offers powerful processing with high-end graphics, extra memory, and a larger, higher-resolution display but at the expense of portability due to its larger size, weight, and shorter battery life. The MSI Raider GE78 is very good for general use, while the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 is good.
The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 has less RAM and a weaker CPU than the MSI Raider GE78, which makes the MSI better suited for multitasking and handling demanding applications. Additionally, the MSI has a higher quality display with better colors and resolution, contributing to a better overall experience for general use, but it is less portable and has a shorter battery life compared to the Lenovo.

The MSI Raider GE78 is best in class for gaming and AI, while the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 is poor.
The MSI Raider GE78 stands out for gaming and 3D because it has a more powerful Nvidia RTX 4090 GPU and a higher screen refresh rate of 240 Hz, compared to the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 which has a less capable AMD Ryzen 3 7330U Vega 6 GPU and a standard 60 Hz screen refresh rate. Although the Slim 3 is suitable for light gaming, the Raider GE78’s superior graphics and smoother visual performance make it the preferred choice for intensive gaming and 3D applications.

The MSI Raider GE78 is excellent for engineering and design, while the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 is only fair.
The MSI Raider GE78 offers superior engineering and design capabilities due to its more powerful Intel i9 processor, significantly greater RAM and top-tier Nvidia RTX GPU, alongside a high-resolution, color-accurate screen. The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3, while more portable, is less suitable for demanding tasks with its AMD Ryzen 3 processor, less RAM, a less powerful integrated Vega GPU, and inferior screen quality.

The MSI Raider GE78 has a better screen than the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 for general use, gaming and AI, engineering and design, content creation, and software development.
The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 has a screen that works well for everyday tasks due to its adequate resolution and brightness, but it falls short for engineering and design work because it doesn't cover the wider color gamuts required for precise color work. For gaming and 3D, its relatively slow refresh rate fails to deliver the fluid visuals that gamers and 3D professionals need, even though it might have a decent resolution and panel type.
The MSI Raider GE78's screen shines in both general use and professional design tasks with high resolution, good panel type, and excellent color gamut coverage, making it a strong choice for detailed work and everyday activities. Despite these qualities, its poor performance for gaming and 3D tasks is due to a refresh rate that isn't high enough to support smooth, fast-paced visuals, which are critical for those applications.

Olivier Martin, Ryan Lim, and John Peroramas | May 2023
"The Lenovo IdeaPad 3i is decent for use as a workstation. Its Intel CPU and integrated graphics can only handle light productivity tasks, not demanding workloads like video editing or 3D graphics. You also can't do any color-critical work because the available displays have a narrow color gamut. It has a good port selection, but its USB-C lacks Thunderbolt 4 support. On the upside, it has a comfortable keyboard and doesn't get hot or loud under load."
"Performance-wise, the GE78 offers a significant boost over the GE77 for just slightly higher power consumption. You'll have to get the RTX 4080 or 4090 configurations to see the performance advantages, however, as the RTX 4070 is closer in performance to the older RTX 3080 Ti. In terms of design, some users might prefer the 16:9 minimalistic look of the older GE77 over the 16:10 retro-inspired GE78 and vice versa. We wouldn't call one better than the other in terms of aesthetics, but we'll give the edge to the GE78 for its stronger hinges and larger keys and clickpad."
