If you primarily use your laptop for everyday tasks such as browsing the web, working on documents, and light photo editing, the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 15" could be the more practical and economical choice, given that it is less expensive. However, if you require a laptop for more demanding applications like 3D rendering, machine learning, or gaming, the Lenovo Legion 5 15" is more suitable due to its higher performance graphics card and processor, although it is heavier and less portable. Keep in mind, the Legion also offers a higher resolution display that could be beneficial for detail-oriented work, but this could also lead to a shorter battery life and contribute to the laptop being more expensive. The Lenovo Legion 5 15" is very good for engineering and design, while the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 15" is only fair.
The Lenovo Legion 5 15" is better suited for engineering and design due to its stronger CPU, double the RAM, a superior GPU capable of hardware ray tracing and DLSS, and a higher resolution screen with better color accuracy, making it very good for these tasks. In contrast, the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 15" has a less powerful CPU and GPU, less RAM, a lower resolution display with poorer color coverage, thus is only considered fair for engineering and design tasks; however, the IdeaPad is more portable and quieter in operation.

The Lenovo Legion 5 15" has a better screen than the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 15" for general use, gaming and AI, and engineering and design.
If you prioritize affordability and need a laptop for everyday tasks like browsing the web or working on documents, the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 15" may fulfill those needs despite its average screen. However, for vivid and accurate colors crucial for engineers and designers, the Lenovo Legion 5 15" offers superior color coverage, making it a better fit despite its higher price. Yet, for gaming or 3D modeling, where high refresh rates provide smoother visuals and better user experience, neither laptop is ideal due to their lower refresh rate screens.

How the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 15" and the Lenovo Legion 5 15" compare to other laptops
"The Lenovo IdeaPad 5 is convincing due to its long battery life. The device scores points especially with its large battery and long battery runtimes combined with its low consumption. The CPU and GPU perform in the test as one would expect, and in line with what was familiar from the somewhat smaller 14-inch sister model, the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 14."
"The Lenovo Legion 5 15 is an affordable gaming laptop with a lot of power. The new AMD processor Ryzen 7 5800H offers plenty of performance and it is also very efficient. The combination with the fast 130W version of the GeForce RTX 3060 ensures high gaming performance. We also like the fast 165 Hz display with the 1080p resolution. The automatic graphics switching causes some problems with stutters, which are very annoying. If you do not need long battery runtimes, you should definitely deactivate the hybrid graphics mode in Lenovo's Vantage app. The Legion 5 15 is never silent."
