The Lenovo IdeaPad 3 17" offers a lower cost, longer battery life, and lighter build which makes it more portable than the MSI Raider GE78. It's suitable for general use like browsing, office work, and light media consumption. On the other hand, the MSI Raider GE78, while more expensive, provides far superior performance that’s better suited for intensive gaming, 3D rendering, machine learning, and heavy engineering tasks. Its superior performance is backed by a high-end processor and a top-tier graphics card but it comes at a tradeoff of shorter battery life and additional weight, reducing its portability. Both laptops have a similar screen size, but the MSI Raider GE78 has a higher resolution and refresh rate, contributing to better image and motion quality which is crucial for high-end gaming and professional creative work. The MSI Raider GE78 is very good for general use, while the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 17" is good.
The Lenovo IdeaPad 3, with its AMD Ryzen 5 processor and 8GB of RAM, is suitable for general tasks, but its moderate screen quality, lower battery capacity, and higher portability make it a practical choice for everyday usage without demanding computing needs. The MSI Raider GE78, on the other hand, offers a top-tier Intel i9 processor and 32GB of RAM, excellent screen quality with higher resolution, and stronger build, but it is heavier and has shorter battery life, positioning it as an exceptional performer for more intensive applications at the expense of portability and battery longevity.

The MSI Raider GE78 is best in class for gaming and AI, while the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 17" is only fair.
The Lenovo IdeaPad 3 17" has a moderate screen refresh rate and a less powerful integrated GPU, which places it at fair for gaming and 3D tasks compared to the MSI Raider GE78 that boasts a very high refresh rate and a top-of-the-line dedicated GPU, placing it at best for those tasks. Additionally, the IdeaPad's screen quality and CPU are adequate, while the Raider GE78 offers superior screen quality and a much more powerful CPU, contributing further to its excellence in gaming and 3D applications.

The MSI Raider GE78 is excellent for engineering and design, while the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 17" is only fair.
The Lenovo IdeaPad 3, with an AMD Ryzen 5 CPU and integrated Vega 7 GPU, has decent performance for engineering tasks but might struggle with heavy design applications, while its screen and speakers are just adequate. In contrast, the MSI Raider GE78 boasts a top-tier Intel i9 CPU and Nvidia RTX 4090 GPU, delivering exceptional performance for all engineering and design workloads, complemented by a superior screen, keyboard, and speaker quality, but its heft and shorter battery life make it less portable.

The MSI Raider GE78 has a better screen than the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 17" for general use, gaming and AI, engineering and design, content creation, and software development.
For general use, the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 17" offers ample screen real estate with its large display and satisfactory resolution and brightness, providing clear and comfortable viewing for everyday tasks. In engineering and design, this laptop's ability to cover a broad range of colors is crucial for accurate visual representation, which the IdeaPad 3 handles well, but the MSI Raider GE78 excels in this regard with even higher color accuracy and range. However, for gaming and 3D applications where swift motion handling is key, both laptops fall short due to lower refresh rates, which can lead to less fluid motion and a less immersive experience.

"The Lenovo IdeaPad 3 17" defies expectations. Indeed, it is just a minor upgrade over last year. However, this doesn’t make the laptop any less terrific. It’s got a great performance, courtesy of the Ryzen 5x25U processors. In addition, you get a pretty good battery life. Perhaps, the 2-hour decrease in video playback, compared to last year is not great, but still, 10 hours of Web browsing and 7 hours of video playback is okay for 17-inch notebooks."
"Performance-wise, the GE78 offers a significant boost over the GE77 for just slightly higher power consumption. You'll have to get the RTX 4080 or 4090 configurations to see the performance advantages, however, as the RTX 4070 is closer in performance to the older RTX 3080 Ti. In terms of design, some users might prefer the 16:9 minimalistic look of the older GE77 over the 16:10 retro-inspired GE78 and vice versa. We wouldn't call one better than the other in terms of aesthetics, but we'll give the edge to the GE78 for its stronger hinges and larger keys and clickpad."
