The HP 14" Laptop and Lenovo IdeaPad 1 14" are both only fair for general use, though the HP 14" Laptop is somewhat better.
The HP 14" Laptop is rated as fair for general use due to its decent CPU and RAM, which contribute to better performance, a higher quality IPS screen with a resolution that is more suitable for a variety of tasks, and sufficient storage for everyday applications. On the other hand, the Lenovo IdeaPad 1 14" is considered poor for general use because it has a less powerful CPU, less RAM which might slow down multitasking, a lower quality TN screen with less resolution that could affect the viewing experience, and minimal storage capacity that might require additional solutions for data storage.

The HP 14" Laptop has a better screen than the Lenovo IdeaPad 1 14" for general use, gaming and AI, engineering and design, software development, and content creation.
If you prioritize viewing documents and browsing the web, the HP's better resolution and brightness will provide a clearer and more comfortable experience than the Lenovo IdeaPad, but for engineering and design tasks, neither laptop offers the wide color gamuts necessary for precise color work. Neither laptop, however, will be suitable for gaming or 3D applications, as they lack high refresh rates; still, the HP will perform slightly better due to its superior screen resolution and panel type. Ultimately, the HP stands out for general use with its fair screen quality, while both laptops may not meet the demands for professional design and gaming due to their respective screen limitations.

While neither is designed for high-end gaming, the HP's superior graphics processing unit (GPU) and screen quality make it fair for casual gaming, unlike the Lenovo, which is poor for such tasks.

How the HP 14" Laptop and the Lenovo IdeaPad 1 14" compare to other laptops
"This feels like an ideal laptop for someone who doesn’t want to spend a lot of money on a laptop and isn’t too bothered by things like build quality or construction. It’s a laptop that will be used to pay bills, keep track of expenses, do some online shopping, and will be tucked away in a spare bedroom/home office. It’s an appliance designed to do a job without fuss. It’s not a premium experience—the materials do feel a little cheap, the display won’t exactly wow you, and the battery life is nothing to write home about, especially if you’ve used more expensive devices. But overall it’s not too shabby, especially for the price."
"The IdeaPad 1 14 is a simple machine, but it’s well-designed and has nearly everything you’d expect from a no-nonsense laptop that allows you to check emails and get schoolwork or other light tasks done with relative ease. A "true" 128GB SSD (as opposed to an eMMC drive) and a roomy 14-inch full HD display are arguably the star attractions, with the comfortable keyboard and reasonably modern styling playing important backup roles."
