If your priority is a larger screen and more power for tasks like 3D rendering or engineering, the HP 17" Laptop, with its bigger display and stronger processor, is the better option, but it comes at the cost of reduced battery life and heavier weight, making it less portable. On the other hand, the HP 14" Laptop is more budget-friendly, lighter, and easier to carry around with better battery life, but it has a smaller screen and is not as powerful for demanding tasks. Consider where you'll use the laptop and what kind of work you'll be doing—portability or performance. Give Feedback

The HP 17" Laptop is good for general use, while the HP 14" Laptop is only fair.

The HP 17" Laptop and HP 14" Laptop are both only fair for engineering and design, though the HP 17" Laptop is somewhat better.
The HP 14" Laptop is fair for engineering and design due to its modest AMD Ryzen 5 CPU and its integrated Vega 7 graphics, making it less powerful for demanding tasks but lighter and easier to carry. In contrast, the HP 17" Laptop is good for these uses because it houses a more potent AMD Ryzen 7 CPU and Vega 8 graphics, alongside a larger screen for detailed work, although it is heavier and less portable.

The HP 17" Laptop has a better screen than the HP 14" Laptop for general use, engineering and design, and content creation.
For general use, both the HP 14" and 17" laptops have screens that offer resolutions and brightness levels that are adequate but don't stand out, with panel types that are sufficient for everyday tasks like browsing and document editing. When it comes to engineering and design work, their color gamut coverage may not meet the higher standards required for professional-grade visual work, likely providing an acceptable but not ideal range of colors. For gaming and 3D applications, the lower refresh rates of these screens can lead to less fluid motion and responsiveness, which is less appealing for fast-paced visuals that benefit from higher refresh rates.

Although they have very similar scores, PerfectRec considers HP 17" Laptop to be only fair for gaming and AI, while the HP 14" Laptop is poor.
When considering gaming and 3D applications on laptops, the HP 14" with a less powerful GPU and lower screen refresh rate may not deliver the most fluid visuals compared to higher-end gaming laptops, but can manage the basics, while the larger HP 17" provides a bit more screen space for immersiveness despite similar limitations in refresh rate and GPU performance. Both models, however, compensate with decent CPUs and screen quality, contributing to the overall experience, without reaching the high standards needed by the most demanding games and 3D tasks.

How the HP 14" Laptop and the HP 17" Laptop compare to other laptops
"This feels like an ideal laptop for someone who doesn’t want to spend a lot of money on a laptop and isn’t too bothered by things like build quality or construction. It’s a laptop that will be used to pay bills, keep track of expenses, do some online shopping, and will be tucked away in a spare bedroom/home office. It’s an appliance designed to do a job without fuss. It’s not a premium experience—the materials do feel a little cheap, the display won’t exactly wow you, and the battery life is nothing to write home about, especially if you’ve used more expensive devices. But overall it’s not too shabby, especially for the price."
"As far as starter laptops go, the HP Laptop 17 is a sound investment. Sure, it might not be the lightest of options, but what you get for the price is a well-rounded machine that fits multiple niches. Whether it be office duties that require you to multi-task between multiple programs, or study tasks in which you’ll spend hours browsing online, this laptop does it all. Plus, when it's time to unwind, you can watch your favorite shows or movies on a super-wide display. What's best of all is that you can do all this for about half a day on a single charge."
