The Gateway 15.6" is less expensive and has adequate performance for general use with a decent screen, but it lacks gaming capabilities. The MSI Katana 15 costs more but offers much stronger performance for 3D work, machine learning, and gaming with a superior graphics card and a higher refresh rate display. If you need power for intensive tasks and can afford a higher price, go for the MSI. If you prioritize saving money and mainly use your laptop for everyday tasks, the Gateway could be a good fit. The MSI Katana 15 is good for engineering and design, while the Gateway 15.6" is only fair.
The MSI Katana 15 is considered good for engineering and design due to its higher-end Nvidia RTX 4060 graphics card, which outperforms the integrated GPU in the Gateway 15.6". Although both laptops have similar CPU and RAM, the MSI's graphics power, higher screen refresh rate, and color accuracy make it more suitable for intensive tasks and detailed design work, despite being slightly less portable and noisier under load compared to the fair-rated Gateway.

The MSI Katana 15 has a better screen than the Gateway 15.6" for general use, gaming and AI, engineering and design, content creation, and software development.
The Gateway 15.6" and MSI Katana 15 laptops have screens that are adequate for everyday tasks like browsing and document editing due to their acceptable resolution and brightness, but they may not provide the most vibrant or sharp visuals. For engineering and design, where accurate color representation is crucial, both models fall short as they lack wide color gamuts, meaning colors may not be as true-to-life or consistent. In gaming and 3D environments, the importance of smooth motion is paramount, and both laptops' lower refresh rates will lead to less fluid visuals, which can be a disadvantage for fast-paced games or intricate 3D work.

How the Gateway 15.6" and the MSI Katana 15 compare to other laptops
"Some concessions have to be made when shopping for a budget laptop. Walmart's Gateway Ultra Slim laptops succeeds on the affordability front and delivers serviceable specs and good battery life, though it's hard to claim it's the best (or even particularly good) at any particular aspect. Its build quality, especially the touchpad, is mediocre, and its performance is decent but doesn't lead the way. The Gateway does undercut the cost of some competitors and offers ample storage with good connectivity, so it's not to be ignored."
"The MSI Katana 15 B12 combines a Gen12 CPU with an RTX 4050, which is actually not a bad idea for a budget gamer. The CPU is anything but bad and the GPU in the Katana 15 proves to be significantly more efficient than last year's models. However, our main point of criticism for budget gamers is the price: while you can get budget laptops with RTX 3060 from around US$800, you pay a whole US$1,499.99 here! The efficiency advantages of the RTX 4050 do not justify this price premium."
