If you're looking for a more budget-friendly option, the Dell Latitude 14 7490 could be appealing due to its lower price point. It offers a larger screen size, a durable build, and is designed with business users in mind, which can be advantageous if you require a laptop for work purposes. The Dell also has a larger array of ports, which is useful if you need to connect multiple devices. On the other hand, despite being more expensive, the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 13" offers a higher screen resolution, which results in sharper and clearer visuals, beneficial for tasks like photo editing or streaming high-quality video. It also has a more modern processor and comes with a newer operating system (Windows 11 Home versus Windows 10 Pro on the Dell). Additionally, the Surface Laptop is lighter and thinner, making it more portable and easier to carry around, a significant advantage if you travel frequently or work on the go. Ultimately, your choice should reflect your priorities: if cost and a variety of ports are critical, the Dell may suit you, but if you favor portability, screen quality, and newer hardware, the Surface Laptop could be worth the extra expense. Henry T. Casey | April 2018
"The Dell Latitude 7490's got the speed you need (and then some), a keyboard that's comfortable enough for writing all day long and a battery that supports a full 8-hour workday. If only the display were brighter and it managed heat better. If you need every minute of battery life you can get, the extended-battery version of the Lenovo ThinkPad T480 lasts 8 hours longer than the Latitude 7490, but its display is much less colorful."

Lori Grunin | October 2022
"The Surface Laptop 5 remains afloat as a solid machine. It's just not one that stands out in any particular way. Just like the last one. The biggest upgrade were some new components, but they perform in the same range as other laptops with them, and frequently at the bottom of that range. I suspect Microsoft's settings are very conservative to help keep cooling and battery life within reason in the older chassis design."
