If you need a laptop for high-performance tasks like gaming, 3D rendering, or intensive engineering software, the Dell Alienware m16 R2 would be the better choice, with more powerful hardware. However, it is less portable due to its weight and generally has shorter battery life. On the other hand, the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 17" is more budget-friendly, offers decent performance for everyday use such as web browsing, document editing, and light media consumption; it's also lighter and often has longer battery life, making it better for carrying around or for longer periods away from a power source. The Dell Alienware m16 R2 has a better screen than the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 17" for general use, gaming and AI, engineering and design, software development, and content creation.
For general use, a laptop with a high-resolution display, vibrant colors, and ample brightness, like on the Dell Alienware m16 R2, offers a clear and vivid viewing experience that enhances everyday tasks. When it comes to engineering and design, professionals need a display with wide color coverage to ensure accurate color representation, which the Dell's screen provides. However, for gaming and 3D applications where smooth motion is critical, a high refresh rate is essential, and since the Dell Alienware m16 R2 has lower refresh capabilities, it falls short compared to screens designed specifically for these purposes.

How the Dell Alienware m16 R2 and the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 17" compare to other laptops
"Alienware’s m16 R2 is a solid gaming laptop that leaves much to be desired, particularly in its quest to fulfill your needs as a product for productivity. Battery life under eight hours and a dim display are both vital issues for something that will accompany you through school projects or a workday. However, the Alienware m16 R2 is an exceedingly powerful gaming laptop, consistently being one of the best in our performance tests when compared against similar products. Even then, its display is lacking color, its fans get pretty darn loud, and its speakers aren’t punchy enough to rise above that noise."
"The Lenovo IdeaPad 3 17" defies expectations. Indeed, it is just a minor upgrade over last year. However, this doesn’t make the laptop any less terrific. It’s got a great performance, courtesy of the Ryzen 5x25U processors. In addition, you get a pretty good battery life. Perhaps, the 2-hour decrease in video playback, compared to last year is not great, but still, 10 hours of Web browsing and 7 hours of video playback is okay for 17-inch notebooks."
