The Apple MacBook Air (2022) is known for its sleek design, portability, and strong battery life, ideal for general use, on-the-go professionals, and students who prioritize mobility and are ingrained in the Apple ecosystem. Conversely, the MSI Katana 17 is generally larger, offering a more powerful performance suitable for gaming, 3D rendering, and engineering software, at the cost of reduced portability and potentially shorter battery life. If tasks like video editing or heavy multitasking are common for you, and portability isn't as crucial, the MSI may better meet your needs despite being more expensive. However, for everyday tasks with frequent travel or long days without a power source, the MacBook Air may be the preferable option with its combination of performance, ease of carrying, and longevity on a single charge. The MSI Katana 17 is very good for engineering and design, while the Apple MacBook Air (2022) is good.
The MSI Katana 17 stands out for engineering and design due to its higher RAM, more powerful Intel processor, and dedicated Nvidia RTX GPU, which collectively afford superior performance for complex tasks and graphics-intensive applications; however, it's heavier and has less battery life than the Apple MacBook Air, which boasts portability and a fanless design but has less RAM and relies on an integrated GPU that is less suited for demanding engineering software and 3D work. The MacBook Air's superior screen quality and silent operation make it ideal for design-focused users who prioritize display and soundless working environment, while the Katana 17 is better for those requiring raw computational power and advanced graphics capabilities.

The Apple MacBook Air has a better screen than the MSI Katana 17 for general use, engineering and design, and software development.
The MacBook Air's screen offers high resolution and brightness, which makes text sharp and colors pop for general use, and its wide color gamut suits professionals in engineering and design who need accurate color representation. However, its lower refresh rate detracts from the smooth visuals required in 3D applications, where this is a key attribute. In contrast, the MSI Katana 17's screen, while still suitable for general tasks, has a more limited color range impacting precision in engineering and design, and its modest refresh rate might not keep up with the demanding frame rates preferred in gaming and 3D environments.

How the Apple MacBook Air (2022) and the MSI Katana 17 compare to other laptops
"The Apple MacBook Air M2 Entry is a very good, but too expensive daily MacBook. The new MacBook Air M2 is undoubtedly once again a very good mobile companion, but we are still a little bit disappointed on a very high level, which is definitely connected with the increased price point. The new chassis is extremely slim and the front edge is no problem during typing, but the bezels are pretty wide for a modern device and in addition with the vertical space required for the notch, the new Air has larger footprint than some Windows rivals."
"The MSI Katana 17 B13V laptop impressed us in its main area of competency - gaming. The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 ensures high-performance levels which can compete with the previous generation's RTX 3070 Ti. In addition to the speedy GPU, the MSI comes with a 144 Hz display as well as an RGB keyboard and provides a very good typing experience. Despite the power at hand, the laptop remains comparatively cool."
