If you prioritize a larger screen and slightly better battery capacity, the Acer Aspire 5 17 would be beneficial, especially for tasks that may benefit from a bigger display. However, the ASUS Vivobook 15X offers greater portability due to its smaller size and lesser weight, making it a better companion for on-the-go usage while still providing competent performance for everyday tasks. Both laptops offer similar storage and memory, suitable for general use and capable of handling routine engineering software. Neither are ideal for heavy gaming or intensive 3D or machine learning tasks; for those requirements, a more specialized, high-performance laptop would be recommended. Give Feedback

The Acer Aspire 5 17 has a better screen than the ASUS Vivobook 15X for software development.
For general use, both the Acer Aspire 5 17 and the ASUS Vivobook 15X offer screens with resolutions and brightness levels that are adequate, meaning they are clear and vivid enough for everyday tasks like browsing and watching videos, but the panel technology does not provide the best possible sharpness or color accuracy. In engineering and design, the importance of color accuracy is critical, and while these laptops have fair screen quality, they do not cover a wide color gamut, which can limit the precision in color-intensive tasks like photo editing or CAD work. For gaming and 3D applications, the lower refresh rates on these laptops mean less fluid motion and responsiveness, which is less ideal for fast-paced games or smooth rendering of 3D animations.

The Acer Aspire 5 17 and ASUS Vivobook 15X are both good for general use.
The Acer Aspire 5 has a larger screen with comparable quality and a slightly larger battery than the ASUS Vivobook 15X, providing a better viewing experience and potentially longer use between charges, which may justify its lower portability due to its bigger size and weight. The ASUS Vivobook 15X, although smaller and lighter making it more portable, tends to have less favorable heat management and speaker quality which would affect prolonged use and multimedia experience.

The Acer Aspire 5 17 and ASUS Vivobook 15X are both only fair for gaming and AI.
The Acer Aspire 5 17 and ASUS Vivobook 15X are both fair for gaming and 3D due to their integrated GPUs, which perform adequately but are less powerful compared to dedicated gaming GPUs. The Acer employs Intel's i5-1335U Iris Xe graphics and the ASUS uses AMD Ryzen 5 7530U Vega 7 graphics; both of which provide sufficient capability for casual gaming and basic 3D tasks but may struggle with more demanding applications at high settings, and they both share standard 60Hz refresh rate screens which is acceptable for casual use but not ideal for competitive gaming where higher refresh rates are preferred.

The Acer Aspire 5 17 and ASUS Vivobook 15X are both only fair for engineering and design.
The Acer Aspire 5 17 and the ASUS Vivobook 15X are both equipped with moderate CPU and GPU capabilities, ample RAM, and IPS screens with standard resolution, making them fair options for engineering and design tasks that are not too demanding. However, the Acer's larger screen and weight make it less portable, while both have good screen quality, but you may consider the ASUS more for portability, as it's lighter and has a smaller screen, and both have satisfactory keyboard and speaker quality, and manage operating noise effectively.

How the Acer Aspire 5 17 and the ASUS Vivobook 15X compare to other laptops
"The Acer Aspire 5 17 laptop shows the expected strengths in the test. Besides the usual high build quality, the configuration convinces in most benchmarks and tests. The combination of CPU, GPU, and RAM is absolutely sufficient for the everyday office and browsing tasks of a laptop. It also renders the odd game passably if the requirements aren't too high. We liked the matte display in the test as well as the fairly manageable dimensions despite the screen size. It can also be used outdoors, even if it's certainly not a laptop designed for mobility."
"All in all, my day on the Vivobook had its ups and downs. It is a really pretty and well-built device, and it had all of the functionality I needed to get me through my browser-based workload. But the speakers weren’t my favorite, and the battery life was just too short."
