If you prioritize a larger screen and a bit lighter weight, the Acer Aspire 5 17 may be better, though with a lower refresh rate making it less suitable for fast-paced games. However, if better performance in 3D tasks, machine learning, and gaming is important, along with increased portability due to longer battery life, the ASUS TUF Gaming A16 would be a better fit, but it comes with a smaller screen and slightly heavier weight. Both are similarly priced, support USB-C charging, and have backlit keyboards, but the ASUS offers a higher refresh rate and better color coverage, making it more suitable for engineering and intensive gaming. The ASUS TUF Gaming A16 is good for gaming and AI, while the Acer Aspire 5 17 is only fair.
The Acer Aspire 5 17 is equipped with an integrated Intel Iris Xe graphics chip which is less powerful than the dedicated AMD RX 7600S in the ASUS TUF Gaming A16, and it has a standard 60Hz screen refresh rate compared to the ASUS's higher 165Hz, making the latter better for smooth gaming and 3D applications, especially where fast motion is involved. The ASUS also boasts a stronger CPU and higher screen pixel density, further enhancing gaming and screen quality for more demanding tasks.

The ASUS TUF Gaming A16 is good for engineering and design, while the Acer Aspire 5 17 is only fair.
The Acer Aspire 5 17, equipped with an Intel i5 processor and integrated graphics, offers basic performance suitable for lighter engineering and design work, but with a screen that provides less coverage of color space and lower brightness it is less ideal for color-critical work. The ASUS TUF Gaming A16, on the other hand, features a more powerful AMD Ryzen 7 processor and dedicated AMD graphics, along with a higher-resolution screen with better color performance and refresh rates, making it more suitable for demanding engineering simulations and design work where GPU performance and screen quality are crucial.

The ASUS TUF Gaming A16 has a better screen than the Acer Aspire 5 17 for general use, gaming and AI, engineering and design, and software development.
The Acer Aspire 5 17 offers adequate display features like resolution and brightness for tasks like browsing and streaming, making it suitable for general use, but it may lack the wide color gamut needed for precise engineering and design work, and its lower refresh rate limits the smoothness in fast-paced games and 3D applications. The ASUS TUF Gaming A16 provides a balance of good resolution and brightness for clear and vibrant images in everyday tasks as well as engineering and design, yet the screen doesn’t excel in refresh rates vital for gaming and high-end 3D graphics. Choosing between the two, consider how critical color accuracy and smooth motion are for your workflow and entertainment.

How the Acer Aspire 5 17 and the ASUS TUF Gaming A16 compare to other laptops
"The Acer Aspire 5 17 laptop shows the expected strengths in the test. Besides the usual high build quality, the configuration convinces in most benchmarks and tests. The combination of CPU, GPU, and RAM is absolutely sufficient for the everyday office and browsing tasks of a laptop. It also renders the odd game passably if the requirements aren't too high. We liked the matte display in the test as well as the fairly manageable dimensions despite the screen size. It can also be used outdoors, even if it's certainly not a laptop designed for mobility."
"The A16 makes an excellent case against more expensive laptops like the Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo 16 and the MSI Katana GF76, especially if you’re into 1080p gaming. However, although its affordable, it doesn’t skimp on performance or a robust chassis. But for me, the biggest factor that sets it apart from these options is its incredible battery life. In my time reviewing laptops, I can’t remember when I last saw a gaming laptop lasted 11 and a half hours on a single charge, which makes the A16, in my book, truly outstanding."
