The Sony A80J OLED TV comes at a premium price and delivers excellent overall picture quality. It's particularly suited for watching movies, series, and sports content due to its superior contrast and capability to produce perfect blacks, making it ideal for dark room viewing. However, it's merely good in bright rooms, which means it's not the best option if your viewing environment is very well-lit. For gamers, this TV offers very good gaming performance with support for 4k at 120Hz, but keep in mind it doesn't have HDR10+ support, although it does support Dolby Vision and HLG. The sound quality is very good, with great speakers, and it has a versatile stand that can be adjusted to accommodate a soundbar if needed. Give Feedback

Ratings by Category

Movies & TV shows:
4.8
The Sony A80J OLED's exceptional contrast and perfect black uniformity offer a cinematic experience ideal for watching movies, as scenes with dark elements display true depth and realism. Additionally, its wide viewing angles and very good out-of-the-box color accuracy ensure that the picture looks great from different seating positions without the need for immediate calibration.
Gaming:
4.7
PerfectRec’s gaming score measures a TV's performance when it comes to playing video games. It is based on several factors that can significantly impact the quality of the gaming experience, including screen response time, input lag, and refresh rate. Screen response time is a critical factor that determines how quickly the TV can transition from one color to the next, while input lag measures the delay between the gaming console output and the TV display. Refresh rate refers to the number of times per second that the TV displays a new frame, which can impact the smoothness of the gaming experience. The gaming score also takes into account two other features: local dimming in gaming mode, which can enhance contrast and picture quality, and black frame insertion, which can reduce screen brightness and create a smoother gaming experience.
Sports:
4.7
The Sony A80J is excellent for watching sports due to its wide viewing angle, ensuring a clear picture no matter where you're seated, and its outstanding motion processing that keeps the action smooth without blur. It also has a very good reflections score, meaning it handles reflections well which is crucial when watching sports during the day or in well-lit rooms.
News, Talk & Reality TV:
4.7
PerfectRec’s news, talk, & other TV score prioritizes upscaling, brightness, contrast, out of the box color accuracy, and screen uniformity. This is because almost all news and talk shows are created in Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) with lower resolutions, such as 720P and 1080P. The purpose of this prioritization is to ensure that lower resolution content looks good on a 4K display and to help you identify which TV will perform best when watching live TV via Cable, Satellite, or Antenna.
Cartoons & Animaton:
4.6
PerfectRec’s cartoons & animation score places great importance on several crucial aspects of TV picture quality, such as color gamut, color volume, brightness, and out-of-the-box color accuracy, in addition to good gray uniformity and contrast, to ensure that you can fully enjoy your favorite animated content. Cartoons and animation are characterized by vibrant and colorful imagery, however, accurately displaying this type of content can pose a challenge for TVs, particularly during scenes with complex lighting or subtle color variations.
Overall Picture:
4.6
The Sony A80J boasts excellent contrast and perfect black uniformity owing to its OLED panel, ensuring deep blacks and a striking range of dark to light in the image. Additionally, it has very good color performance right out of the box along with a strong color gamut and good color volume, making for vibrant and accurate colors.
Bright Room:
4.1
The Sony A80J is a good choice for watching TV in a bright room because it has good SDR and HDR brightness levels, helping maintain picture quality under various lighting conditions. Additionally, it handles reflections very well, reducing the impact of ambient light and glare on your viewing experience.
