The Sony X80K is an LCD TV that is priced in the lower midrange. It offers fair overall picture quality with good performance for watching sports and straight-on viewing, but it has poor performance for gaming and watching movies in dark rooms. The TV is suitable for bright rooms to a fair degree but struggles with dark room viewing due to limited contrast and black uniformity. Its sound quality is fair, and while it doesn't support HDR10+ or have great speakers, it does support Dolby Vision and HLG for HDR content. The Sony X80K features a good color out of the box and upscaling capabilities, making it a solid choice for watching news, talk shows, reality TV, and cartoons or animations. It has 4 HDMI ports but is not ideal for use as a computer monitor. The stand offers two positions, accommodating narrower surfaces, but keep in mind that the gaming experience might not be optimal due to its poor response time and input lag. Give Feedback

Ratings by Category

Sports:
4.2
The Sony X80K is great for watching sports because it excels in motion processing which is crucial for fast-paced action, ensuring smooth playback without blurring. Additionally, the TV has good viewing angles and gray uniformity, which means that the game looks consistent across the screen, even when you're not sitting directly in front of the TV.
News, Talk & Reality TV:
4.1
The Sony X80K excels in upscaling content, which ensures that lower-resolution programs such as news or talk shows look crisp on the TV, and its good SDR brightness means the picture will remain clear and visible even in well-lit rooms, making it suitable for daytime viewing of regular TV programs. While its color performance is adequate right out of the box and the color gamut is good, the lack of local dimming and only moderate contrast might not provide the depth in darker scenes that other TVs might offer.
Cartoons & Animaton:
4.1
PerfectRec’s cartoons & animation score places great importance on several crucial aspects of TV picture quality, such as color gamut, color volume, brightness, and out-of-the-box color accuracy, in addition to good gray uniformity and contrast, to ensure that you can fully enjoy your favorite animated content. Cartoons and animation are characterized by vibrant and colorful imagery, however, accurately displaying this type of content can pose a challenge for TVs, particularly during scenes with complex lighting or subtle color variations.
Bright Room:
3.4
The Sony X80K TV is fair for watching in a bright room largely due to its "Good" SDR brightness that can handle most lighting conditions; however, its handling of reflections is only rated as "Fair," meaning that it may struggle with direct light sources. While it boasts an acceptable contrast and color performance for the price, it doesn't stand out in these areas, which can affect the overall viewing experience in a well-lit room.
Overall Picture:
3.0
The Sony X80K has fair picture quality as it displays HDR content with only moderate brightness and its color performance out of the box is average, not showing colors as accurately or as vibrant as some other TVs. Additionally, while its contrast capabilities and black uniformity are decent, they do not achieve the deep blacks needed for a more immersive viewing experience in dark scenes.

Tom's guide

Matthew Murray | February 2023
"The Sony Bravia X80K is an inexpensive LCD TV that turns out pleasing visuals and is armed with a number of other desirable features. Sony’s robust internal processing, results in generally better picture quality than you’ll usually get for this price. In practice, the X80K is satisfying to watch. You’re not going to get as sumptuous a picture as you may with other TVs from Sony or other companies, but we didn’t encounter anything that looked bad on it."
