The MSI Katana 17 is good for general use, while the MSI GF65 Thin is only fair.
The MSI Katana 17, with its larger screen and likely more powerful CPU and greater RAM, offers an enhanced experience for general use, whereas the compactness and lighter weight of the MSI GF65 Thin might trade off some performance and screen size for better portability and potentially longer battery life. Although both have sufficient storage and reasonable keyboard and speaker quality, the larger chassis of the Katana 17 may provide an advantage in heat management and could result in quieter operation during intensive tasks.

The MSI Katana 17 is good for gaming and AI, while the MSI GF65 Thin is only fair.
The MSI Katana 17 offers better performance for gaming and 3D because it is equipped with a more powerful Nvidia RTX 4060 GPU compared to the MSI GF65 Thin's RTX 3060, which is significant for rendering complex graphics. Both have equal screen refresh rates, which matters for smooth visuals, but the advanced GPU in the Katana 17 makes it more capable for intensive tasks despite them both having excellent quality screens.

The MSI Katana 17 has a better screen than the MSI GF65 Thin for general use, content creation, and software development.
For general use, the Katana 17's higher resolution and brighter display provide clearer and more vibrant visuals than the GF65 Thin, offering a more pleasant viewing experience for everyday tasks. In engineering and design, the Katana 17's fair color coverage meets minimum requirements for color-sensitive work; however, both models lack the wider color gamuts that professionals may seek for precision. As for gaming and 3D applications, despite their capable resolutions and panel types, the lower refresh rates on both the GF65 Thin and Katana 17 lead to less fluid motion, making them less suitable for high-frame-rate gaming experiences.

How the MSI GF65 Thin and the MSI Katana 17 compare to other laptops
"The MSI GF65 Thin offers a GeForce RTX 3060 on a budget. The MSI GF65 is a relatively inexpensive RTX 3060 laptop and, perhaps not coincidentally, it also comes with a slower-than-average RTX 3060 GPU. Other laptops we've tested thus far with the same GPU are about 10 to 15 percent faster. CPU performance is also slightly slower than average unless if users decide to enable Cooler Boost mode. Colors, black-white response times, Thunderbolt, and DisplayPort are either average or completely omitted. Gamers who want to maximize performance-per-dollar without sacrificing RAM or SSD upgradeability will find the lightweight MSI GF65 attractive."
"The MSI Katana 17 B13V laptop impressed us in its main area of competency - gaming. The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 ensures high-performance levels which can compete with the previous generation's RTX 3070 Ti. In addition to the speedy GPU, the MSI comes with a 144 Hz display as well as an RGB keyboard and provides a very good typing experience. Despite the power at hand, the laptop remains comparatively cool."
