If you prioritize a larger screen and are trying to save money, the HP 17" laptop can be a good choice; however, it will be bulkier and harder to carry around. On the other hand, the Lenovo ThinkPad T14, while typically more expensive, offers better portability, a more robust build quality, and is often preferred by business professionals for its keyboard and durability. It's better suited for those who travel frequently or need a more rugged, compact machine. The Lenovo ThinkPad T14 has a better screen than the HP 17" Laptop for general use, engineering and design, content creation, and software development.
The HP 17" Laptop, with its fair screen quality, offers adequate resolution and brightness for daily tasks but may lack the color accuracy and wide color gamuts needed for precision in engineering and design, and its lower refresh rate makes it less suitable for smooth rendering in gaming and 3D applications. The Lenovo ThinkPad T14's screen provides good resolution and brightness, enabling crisp text and vivid images for general use, and its superior color reproduction meets the demands of professional engineering and design work, but like the HP, it falls short for gaming and 3D because of a less than ideal refresh rate. In essence, while both laptops are capable for general use and professional work, neither is optimized for the high-refresh-rate experience sought by gamers and those working with 3D graphics.

The Lenovo ThinkPad T14 and HP 17" Laptop are both only fair for gaming and AI.
The HP 17" laptop with a larger screen may provide a more immersive gaming and 3D experience, and its GPU ensures fair performance in such tasks, but the lower screen refresh rate might not be ideal for fast-paced games. Conversely, the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 offers a balance between a quality CPU for handling games and a decent GPU for 3D applications, but its smaller screen size and similar refresh rate limitations mean it might not excel in the highest settings or the most demanding gaming scenarios.

How the HP 17" Laptop and the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 compare to other laptops
"As far as starter laptops go, the HP Laptop 17 is a sound investment. Sure, it might not be the lightest of options, but what you get for the price is a well-rounded machine that fits multiple niches. Whether it be office duties that require you to multi-task between multiple programs, or study tasks in which you’ll spend hours browsing online, this laptop does it all. Plus, when it's time to unwind, you can watch your favorite shows or movies on a super-wide display. What's best of all is that you can do all this for about half a day on a single charge."
"We like a lot about this laptop. It has many ports, with the inclusion of RJ45-Ethernet as a defining feature. WWAN is upgradable for maximum flexibility and the ThinkPad has many security functions. Working with the ThinkPad input devices is a lot of fun, and Lenovo puts in a serviceable Low Power panel. The AMD Ryzen 7 Pro 7840U delivers a great performance and does not drain the battery fast. Fan noise and temperatures are nothing special, but also far away from bad. With the user replaceable keyboard, the ThinkPad T14 Gen 4 has a special feature rarely present on most modern laptops."
