If you prioritize a larger screen with touch capability and better battery life at a lower price point, the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 15" is a suitable option. Conversely, if you prefer a slightly more portable and slightly more expensive laptop with a smaller screen that still delivers efficient performance for general use, the HP 14" Laptop may fit your needs. Both laptops have the same RAM but the Lenovo offers more storage. The HP is lighter and thus easier to carry, but the Lenovo has a higher build quality and offers better overall performance in more demanding tasks like engineering and 3D/machine learning. The Lenovo IdeaPad 5 15" and HP 14" Laptop are both only fair for engineering and design, though the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 15" is somewhat better.
The HP 14" Laptop, with its AMD Ryzen 5 CPU and Vega 7 GPU, offers decent but not top-tier performance for engineering applications, and its lighter weight makes it more portable; however, its screen quality is middling which matters for design work. In contrast, the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 15" has a slightly more powerful AMD Ryzen 7 CPU and Vega 8 GPU, coupled with a larger and brighter IPS display suitable for detailed design tasks, but it's heavier and its larger size can be less convenient for frequent travel.

The Lenovo IdeaPad 5 15" has a better screen than the HP 14" Laptop for general use, content creation, and software development.
For general use, both the HP and Lenovo laptops have screens that provide adequate resolution and brightness for everyday tasks, but they might lack the vibrancy or crispness of higher-end displays. Engineering and design professionals may find the color accuracy insufficient due to the limited coverage of professional color gamuts like DCI-P3 and Adobe RGB. Gamers and those engaged in 3D work will find the refresh rates lower than ideal, leading to less smooth visual experiences, even if the resolution and panel quality are satisfactory for less demanding activities.

Although they have very similar scores, PerfectRec considers Lenovo IdeaPad 5 15" to be only fair for gaming and AI, while the HP 14" Laptop is poor.
The HP 14" laptop, although it has adequate performance for casual gaming and 3D applications, may be limited by its smaller screen size and potentially lower screen refresh rate compared to larger gaming-specific laptops. The Lenovo IdeaPad 5 15", with its larger screen, is likely to offer a better visual experience for games and 3D content, but both laptops might not have the high-end GPUs required for the most demanding games or professional 3D work, and their CPUs and screen quality, while competent, may not match those of higher-tier gaming or workstations laptops.

How the HP 14" Laptop and the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 15" compare to other laptops
"This feels like an ideal laptop for someone who doesn’t want to spend a lot of money on a laptop and isn’t too bothered by things like build quality or construction. It’s a laptop that will be used to pay bills, keep track of expenses, do some online shopping, and will be tucked away in a spare bedroom/home office. It’s an appliance designed to do a job without fuss. It’s not a premium experience—the materials do feel a little cheap, the display won’t exactly wow you, and the battery life is nothing to write home about, especially if you’ve used more expensive devices. But overall it’s not too shabby, especially for the price."
"The Lenovo IdeaPad 5 is convincing due to its long battery life. The device scores points especially with its large battery and long battery runtimes combined with its low consumption. The CPU and GPU perform in the test as one would expect, and in line with what was familiar from the somewhat smaller 14-inch sister model, the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 14."
