If you're looking for a more affordable, lightweight laptop for everyday tasks, the ASUS Vivobook 16 is the better option; with a respectable battery life, it's suited for on-the-go use. However, if you need a laptop with higher performance for 3D rendering, machine learning, or gaming, the Lenovo Legion Slim 5i, despite being more expensive and heavier, offers a more robust processor and a higher-end graphics card, a brighter display with higher resolution, and superior build quality, which can be crucial for intensive engineering tasks or gaming experiences. The Lenovo Legion Slim 5i is very good for engineering and design, while the ASUS Vivobook 16 is good.
The Lenovo Legion Slim 5i stands out for engineering and design due to its higher-end Intel i7 CPU and dedicated Nvidia RTX GPU, ensuring superior computational performance and graphical capability over the ASUS Vivobook 16's AMD Ryzen CPU and integrated Vega GPU. Additionally, while both have quality IPS displays with a 16:10 aspect ratio, the Legion Slim 5i also boasts a higher screen resolution and color accuracy, making it more suitable for detailed visual work, albeit at the expense of being less portable and having a louder operating noise than the Vivobook.

The Lenovo Legion Slim 5i has a better screen than the ASUS Vivobook 16 for general use, gaming and AI, engineering and design, content creation, and software development.
If you prioritize a crisp, clear display with vibrant colors for everyday computing tasks, the Lenovo Legion Slim 5i with its higher resolution and brighter screen outshines the ASUS Vivobook 16. For engineering and design, where color accuracy is crucial, the Lenovo's superior color gamut coverage means more precise and true-to-life colors. However, for gaming and 3D applications, both laptops fall short because, despite other qualities, they lack the high refresh rates essential for smooth motion and a more immersive experience.

How the ASUS Vivobook 16 and the Lenovo Legion Slim 5i compare to other laptops
Olivier Martin, Ryan Lim, Yannick Khong | May 2023
"The ASUS Vivobook 16 M1605 (2023) is a budget Windows laptop. It's available with various AMD Ryzen 5000 and 7000 U-series CPUs and integrated graphics. You can only get 8GB of RAM; however, there's an empty SO-DIMM slot if you want to upgrade it. It has an FHD+ (1920 x 1200) 16:10 IPS display, a full-size keyboard with a Numpad, a 720p webcam, and Wi-Fi 6E wireless connectivity. Ports include three USB-As, one USB-C, an HDMI, and a headphone jack. The USB-C supports charging but no video output."
"The Lenovo Legion Slim 5 Gen 8 acknowledges that a gaming laptop doesn’t have to be as thick as possible and can still ensure adequate cooling when the muscles need flexing. To this end, in the Slim 5 Gen 8, it finds a neat balance of refined, trimmed-down design that still lets its internals cruise (even above their max power ratings). Lenovo then added in some high-end build quality with an altogether excellent keyboard that’s useful for both work and play."
